2001:

Radio Regulation changes from NZART Web site November 2001:
Changes to Amateur Licensing and the Amateur Operator Certificates of Competency result from the introduction of the Radiocommunications Regulations 2001. There are now only two classes of Amateur Licence: Limited and General. The Novice and Novice/Limited licenses have been removed. The Limited licensing procedure is unchanged. The General class licence is only changed by the lowering of the Morse test requirement to 5 words per minute.

NZART Council has restructured with a much smaller Council body and there is currently no YL representation for the first time since Marion Lister ZL1BKL was elected to Council in 1972.

International travel by several members has enhanced the relationships with DX operators and some of those who have been abroad recently are Rosemary ZL1WRO who visited Australia and in particular Womberoo, then Sue ZL3AHT enjoyed a more extensive trip through China, Europe and Turkey, Joline ZL1UJB met a new grandchild in the USA and Biny ZL2AZY spent several weeks on a 'Study and learn' tour of Sicily and Italy as the International YL Meeting 2002 will be held in Palermo, Sicily Island.

NZART 75th Jubilee Conference was in Auckland and several amateurs were honoured including Celia ZL1ALK for her services to WARO and Amateur Radio. NZART President Peter Norden ZL2SJ presented her with a 75th Anniversary plaque and Certificate of Appreciation.
An Achievement Award was presented to Pamela Blackett ZL1PAM acknowledging her work as a Young Amateur.

At the WARO AGM the membership category of 'Friends of WARO' designed to cater for anyone including OMs who support WARO and make a donation not less than the current subscription was approved for addition to the Constitution. Dennis ZL2BFI was the first such 'Friend of WARO'.

30 Year Continuous Membership certificate was received by Biny Owen ZL2AZY.

Certificates of Merit were awarded to Carol ZL2VQ, Cathy ZL2ADK, Biny ZL2AZY, Jill ZL2DBO, Carolyn ZL2JP, Bev ZL1OS, and Jacqueline ZL1JAQ in recognition of their involvement with the organisation of International YL2000.

Biny ZL2AZY was to receive her 30 year Certificate from Lynnette McDonald ZL1ULM at the YL gathering in Hamilton early September. At this same venue Cathy ZL2ADK presented Biny with the Myrtle Earland Memorial Rose Bowl for her dedication to WARO and Amateur Radio during the past 30 years and she was a most worthy nominee for the WARO Achievement Award 2001. Biny recently concluded a very hectic 3 year period as President that included the International YL2000 preparations.
