1989:

New Award:
The Mountain Buttercup Award commenced on January 1 with the object of contacting YLs in the 60 different towns/cities as listed. The award certificate featured the alpine flower - Ranunculus Lyallii - upon which our WARO badge design is based.

YL get-togethers are still very much to the fore in all regions of the country and serve to strengthen the bond between fellow members. With the hope of improving band conditions, more activity is expected on the 6th of each month for YL Activity Day.

During February a Canterbury YL group comprising Anne ZL3VR, Carleen ZL3ADO, Barbara Symes ZL3AHS and Lorna Allan ZL3AAZ with help and interest from Lurline Quantick ZL3TRQ, Mary Lovell ZL3TOU and Bev Sands activated the ZL2YL field station on the north bank of the Ashley River for the NZART National Field Day HF contest.

Congratulations:
Associate member Noelle and long time WARO supporter Jumbo (Arthur) Godfrey ZL1HV celebrated their Golden Wedding on August 19.
Mavis Stafford VK3KS a DX member who reached 50 years as a licensed amateur radio operator.

Constitution amendments:
Celia ZL1ALK, Jeanne ZL2BOD and Biny Owen ZL2AZY were tasked to re-examine the constitution to bring it up-to-date and the Executive recommended minor changes and the addition of Clause 11(h) Sponsorship Secretary.

AGM at Masterton:
Carol Gaudin ZL2VQ presided with 24 in attendance. Subscriptions were increased to $8.00 and DX remain at $4.00. The increase was necessary as the postage concessions were to be lost and Bulletin printing costs were increasing. Due also to the increasing cost of materials the price of WARO badges increased to $4.00, charms to $2.50 and a new item lapel pins went on sale at $2.50.

Membership at April 30 was Transmitting 137, Associate 23 and DX 87.

Bulletin Editor Alison Talbot ZL1TNQ stepped down after 3 years and the Bulletin will now be produced for the first time in the South Island by Anne ZL3VR. John Hirtzel ZL3ADF Break-In Editor visited the AGM and affirmed that in future WARO would be allocated at least a half page each issue.

NZART President Terry Carrell ZL3QL visited also and much of the discussion during his presence centered around the safe keeping of YL amateur radio related historical documents and memorabilia. As a result of this Dennis Young ZL2BFI offered to mount Thelma Souper's collection of badges so they could best be displayed in our cabinet at NZART Headquarters.

Certificate of Merit:
Presented for the first time at the AGM to -
Ruth Lobb ZL3PL for long service as South Island representative and net controller for more than 12 years,
Alison ZL1TNQ for services as Bulletin Editor, and
Anne ZL3VR for efforts in fostering interest in amateur radio with several projects.
