1988:

Overseas Visitors:
Several of us in different areas had the privilege in March of welcoming the President of YLRL Mary Lou Brown NM7N and Jan Scheuerman WB2JCE direct from their DXpedition to Niue Island. Then we had Bev VK6DE who came to Auckland to finally meet up with fellow West Australian Peggy VK6NKU.

Modern Day Pioneers:
Val Searle ZL3GW described the real reason she decided to join the ranks of licensed amateur radio operators. Put simply - survival! because living most of the time on a remote section of the west coast South Island known as Saltwater Lagoon without electricity or telephone, access to communications was essential.

NZART Headquarters agreed to house our special trophies, gifts and certificates in a glass case for display to visitors to their offices. Dawn Young ZL2AGX offered to attend to the polishing and upkeep duties.

With car rallies becoming more popular in several areas of New Zealand there are a number of YLs moving into communications support for these activities.

Executive continued with monthly on air meetings to maintain efficient progress of the club. Treasurer Anne Griffiths ZL2BOV retired after 2 years in office and Secretary Anne McMaster ZL3VR after 3 years. It was agreed that the net on any 5th Monday in the month be held in the Novice section of 80metres to enable those with restricted licences to have more contact with other members. The Thelma Souper Memorial contest in early April was favoured with excellent conditions and there was a good showing by membership including 2 Novice operators new to HF contest operation. Usual excellent support was received from 128 OM participants.

Honorary Life Member:
Members present at the AGM unanimously endorsed the Executive recommendation to award Honorary Life Membership to Sylvia Kirkland ZL2LS of Napier in recognition of her services to WARO since its inception. Presentation was made by Cathy Purdie ZL2ADK on July 10 at a Napier gathering.

Merit Award:
Created at this time to "recognise various types of service to WARO where the higher recognition of Honorary Life Membership may not be appropriate".

Awards programme:
After all the activity of the Silver Jubilee year the programme became very quiet with only 8 awards and 6 endorsement seals issued during the year.
