1991:

Social gatherings:
During the year opportunities to come together in various areas throughout the country gave more members the chance to become better acquainted with others who until that time were just familiar voices. Early February the Canterbury YLs enjoyed a barbecue and other activities at the home of Carleen ZL3ADO where arrangements were made for another midwinter meal and night of ten pin bowling. Late February the Southern YLs gathered for a luncheon at the Otago Branch NZART clubrooms. Any gathering of YLs in the south was a real treat considering there are so few licensed YL operators in that part of the country. March was time for a shared lunch at the home of Val Hawtree ZL2VAL in Wanganui where YLs from various parts of the North Island gathered. The Northern YLs also met in November at the Hamilton Radio Clubrooms where President Carol ZL2VQ presented a plaque and certificate to Collin Shaw ZL1CS in recognition of his many years service as WARO Patron and invaluable support as photographer and printer of stationery, awards and certificates, etc.

ZL2YL Trustees:
Now that Jeanne ZL4JG (was ZL2BOD) has moved to Dunedin, Anne Griffiths ZL2BOV and Carol Gaudin ZL2VQ in the ZL2 area have been appointed to take on the responsibility of callsign trustees.

Contests and Awards:
Support for DX YL contests and awards is still as popular as ever when conditions permit and in return we had DX interest in our own Thelma Souper Memorial contest in April and WARO awards with applications for the Mountain Buttercup Award gaining momentum as more operators are making a concerted effort to complete it.

Congratulations:
Pearl ZL2QY accepted the position of Patron of NZ WARO,
Aola Johnston ZL1ALE became the first ZL YL to earn a place on the ARRL DXCC Honor Roll with 320 countries confirmed, and also received an NZ WARO Certificate of Merit for achievement in DX operating and her involvement with the DX Hosting programme,
Anne ZL3VR representing the Midland region joined Cathy ZL2ADK on NZART Council,
Raewyn Matsen as runner up to NZART Young Amateur of the Year Achievement Award (exam results) received a 12months complimentary membership to WARO,
Elizabeth Anderson VE7YL and Gwen Tilson VK3DYL - awarded Certificates of Merit for services to the WARO sponsorship programme,
Kay Robertson ZL2BRW - awarded Certificate of Merit (posthumously) for courage and perserverance over disability in pursuit of her hobby.

WARO Amateur of the year:
Recipient of the Myrtle Earland Memorial Rose Bowl was Cathy Purdie ZL2ADK for her services to amateur radio and WARO over the years. She is a current member of the NZART Council having been re-elected for a third term, and attended the WIA (Wireless Institute of Australia) Conference in 1990. A very active member of her local branch and as the current Secretary of the Educational Development Group she spends many hours encouraging the younger enthusiasts.

Silent Keys:
This year was a sad one with the passing of several members -
Kay Robertson ZL2BRW who gradually became paralysed and blind after the onset of multiple sclerosis was introduced to amateur radio and became internationally recognised as a lady of courage. She was made a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International for her determination to overcome and succeed in extreme adversity.

Kay Stewart ZL2TJW - Licensed in 1972 and served as Wanganui Branch Treasurer from 1974 until her death. Kay was a Life Member of that Branch of NZART and always very involved with their huge annual junk sales. Along with husband Barry ZL2AUS they ran the NZART QSL Bureau from Wanganui. She was also a noted smallbore rifle shooter and represented NZ during her more than 35 years involvement with the sport.

Sylvia Kirkland ZL2LS - First licensed in 1954 as ZL2QZ and was the first YL to operate SSB in ZL and enjoyed DX, contests, AREC exercises and Field Days. She was a Foundation Member of WARO in 1962. A shift to the Bay of Islands in 1967 meant a change of callsign to ZL1BGM and in 1976 a shift to Napier resulted in a further callsign change to ZL2LS. Sylvia became an Honorary Life Member of WARO in 1988.

Joy Collis VK4EXB - DX member since 1983 who consistently supported our contests over the years and will be missed also for the contributions of poetry with an amateur radio theme which she wrote for our Bulletin.

Zelma Pearce - Associate member since 1976 and wife of Bob ZL2GJ.

Constitutional changes:
A notice of motion for the AGM at Bulls this year referred specifically to Appointment of Officers with relation to appointment of a Patron and also replace Clause 3(b) to define "voting rights of Associate members in relation to non-transmitting matters." Solutions to both matters were approved by members present.

Carol ZL2VQ was returned for a third term as President while Dawn ZL2AGX on completion of 3 years as Treasurer was replaced by Gwen Leslie ZL2UKG, and after 2 years as Secretary Chris Armstrong ZL1BQW was replaced by Celia ZL1ALK. Vicki ZL1OC and Celia ZL1ALK continued as Award Custodian and Librarian respectively, Anne McMaster ZL3VR continued as Bulletin Editor, Barbara Symes ZL3AHS became Sub-Editor to Break-In. Sponsorship Secretary responsibility was taken over by Dawn ZL2AGX, and Chris ZL1BQW agreed to become the new Contest Manager.

Membership at April 30 was Transmitting 124, Associate 24, and DX 106. There were 25 new members during the year.
