1993:

Overseas Ambassadors:
Christine Armstrong ZL1BQW represented WARO at the International YL meeting in Japan during April and supplied an in-depth article for the Bulletin so all could share her experiences during that trip.
In June another group which included Cheryl Wheatley ZL2VCC, Margaret Davoren ZL2NUT, Jill O'Donnell ZL2DBO and Cathy ZL2ADK set off for the Ham Com Convention in Arlington, Texas and then places further afield. Cathy was the guest speaker for the YL breakfast at the Convention in Dallas.
A group of 6 YLs representing WARO travelled to Australia for the ALARAMEET in Castlemaine during September.
Cheryl ZL2VCC represented New Zealand in China for the Chinese Radio Sports Association's first Region III ARDF (Amateur Radio Direction Finding) championships.

Social Activities:
Many successful YL gatherings including the shared lunch at the Palmerston North home of Alison White ZL2CHE, the Canterbury area summer barbecue and their established winter meal followed by a ten pin bowling night of fun strengthened friendships. The Hamilton Branch Market Day and also the Powder Puff Contest prizegiving afternoon are always very popular with the Northern YLs. The southern YL/Branch 35 NZART combined picnic day late February at the historic Ashley Downs Homestead south of Clinton, the July Hamfest at Oamaru with YLs from Bay of Plenty to Dunedin in attendance and again in early August at the Otago Branch 65th Anniversary with a number of YLs present provided unprecedented opportunities for group socialising in the south.

AGM at Pukekohe:
With more than 40 in attendance Dawn ZL2AGX welcomed NZART President Jim Meachen ZL2BHF who thanked all for what they were doing to promote amateur radio. On the recommendation of the Treasurer Gwen ZL2UKG subscriptions were increased this year to ZL - $10 with DX - $5 and a YL family membership of $12 for any number of family YLs living at the one address and receiving one Bulletin.

Awards:
The NZ WARO programme has been in operation for 24 years now and as Vicki ZL1OC retired from the position of Awards Custodian Carol ZL2VQ assumed that responsibility. A Certificate of Merit was presented to Vicki for her years of dedication to our Awards programme. Norma Parsons ZL1ANP received a 30 year Continuous Membership Certificate.

Silent Key:
Sadly members learned of the death of Dr Brenda Shore ZL4OQ on June 18. Brenda was licensed in 1978 briefly as ZL4TIL until she became ZL4"Ocean Queen". A lady of many talents having gained an MSc at Otago University in 1946 and was the first NZ member to hold a NZ Federation of University Women Fellowship. Gained a PhD at Cambridge in 1954 and was Associate Professor of Botany at Otago from 1971 until retirement in 1983. She was also an exquisite needlewoman and artist of some renown yet still found time to promote WARO. Brenda designed our greeting cards and supplied working drawings for our badge.
