1998:

Contests:
A ZL6YL team comprising Eileen ZL1BRX and Anne Walker ZL1TRH participated in the Jock White Memorial HF Field Day Contest from the former Marine Radio Station ZLD at Musick Point in Auckland. A double first for ZL6YL in Field Day Contest and the first time any amateur radio team had entered a contest from that locality. Annette Bain ZL1UOO was also on hand for support.
The Thelma Souper Memorial Contest was well supported again this year with Win Gilbert ZL2GI top scoring in the YL section, Alex Learmond ZL1BVK in the OM section and Gwen Tilson VK3DYL the DX YL section. Members continue to support several DX YL contests that can be worked on most HF bands.

AGM at Whangarei Kauri Conference:
The new WARO executive has a good mix of experienced and newer members this term. President Biny ZL2AZY and Secretary Life Member Celia ZL1ALK bring much previous experience. Sharron May ZL3AE returned to Committee with new members Moira Baylis ZL1AIA and Jacqueline Goodenough ZL1JAQ. Caroline Sarten ZL2JP became Awards and Contests Manager, Carol ZL2VQ Sponsorship Secretary and Joline ZL1UJB the Bulletin Editor.

Recipients of 30 year Continuous Membership Certificates were -
Ena Monk ZL1BDJ, Elva Henry ZL1BIZ, Marion Lister ZL1BKL and Alma Wills ZL1WA. To date 15 members have been acknowledged in this manner.

It was confirmed that the year 2000 would see ZL YLs hosting a YL celebration for the Millennium in Hamilton. So began the lead up to International YL2000!

Silent Keys:
Conference weekend had a 'missing element' this year - the life and soul of many an amateur radio gathering Betty Holt ZL1UBZ became a silent key in February after a very short illness. Betty joined WARO as an Associate member in 1971 and her cheerful happy nature brightened any occasion. To the surprise of many she joined the ranks of licensed operators in 1994. For her dedication and support of amateur radio in many ways over the years Betty was presented with a Certificate of Merit shortly before her death.

Dawn Young ZL2AGX on August 3 after a brief illness. Although licensed only since 1984, Dawn made a considerable contribution to amateur radio and was recognised world wide as an avid awards hunter with a collection of more than 200 certificates. She was very involved within WARO Executive and Committee and some positions held over the years included Break-In Sub editor, Treasurer, President, Sponsorship Secretary, and in 1996 received the Myrtle Earland Memorial Rose Bowl, the NZ WARO Achievement Award for outstanding services to NZ WARO and amateur radio. Dawn was also a Life Member of Kapiti Branch 69 NZART.

Congratulations:
Ena Monk ZL1BDJ a founding member of the New Zealand Airwomen's Association was recently made Governor of the NZ section of the 99s - an international women pilots organisation based in the USA.
