1999:

Patron celebrates:
Pearl Neilson ZL2QY Life Member of WARO celebrated her 90th birthday on April 1st at Atmore House in Otaki by joining about 40 family members, friends and fellow residents for afternoon tea to mark the day. Pearl may have moved to a rest home, she may be blind and frail and suffer from a hearing loss, but she is still on air!

Silent Keys:
Mary Lou Brown NM7N - a prominent member of YLRL and also held office in ARRL some years ago. A keen DXpeditioner who visited New Zealand twice after DXpeditons in the Pacific region.

Judith Holland ZL1AWM - first licensed in March 1958 and one of the initial 7 YLs who met in Rotorua on March 10 1962 to initiate the club as it is today. She was WARO's longest licensed member. With transfers around the country Judith changed callsign from ZL1AMW to ZL2BHV and then ZL3AGE before 'reclaiming' her original callsign on retirement to Kumeu, north of Auckland. Graduated from Victoria University with a science degree and used her knowledge as a teacher, at one time becoming Chief Examiner for the School Certificate physics examination. She travelled widely and therefore met up with many of her sponsored DX YLs. Her interest and support of WARO has continued over the 37 years since the club was formed.

AGM at Christchurch:
Biny ZL2AZY presided over a small meeting of 17 members. A Notice of Motion regarding OM membership requested at last years AGM was put to the vote and lost and a new motion was then put to the meeting: 'That a Friends of WARO category be established' and passed. The Executive discussed this further before another Notice of Motion was put to the next AGM. Biny and Carol ZL2VQ presented an update on fundraising progress for the International YL2000 event to be held at the Hamilton Gardens in the Waikato.
Treasurer Sharron ZL3AE reported subscriptions from a total membership of 212 adequately covered expenditure. Stock sales have been very few with good supplies of all but teaspoons on hand.

ZM Prefix:
Ministry of Commerce - Radio Operations Division advised that the ZM prefix would be permitted from October 1 until March 31 2000 to include any Y2K celebrations.

Travel:
WARO was represented at the YLRL 60th Convention on the "Queen Mary" at Long Beach California by Biny, Win ZL1BBN and Ethel ZL1BWQ.
ALARAMEET in Brisbane saw a contingent of 11 ZL YLs visit and enjoy the social occasion.

Amateur Radio and Sailing:
With the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenge races for the America's Cup being contested on the waters around the Auckland region between October and March many members were involved in communications for support and also special awards.
