1997:

Silent Keys:
Ethel Smith K4LMB founder and first President of YLRL in 1939 became a silent key on February 5 at age 79. Ethel was first licensed as W7FWB in 1936 and travelled through New Zealand in February 1995.

Anny Schwager DF2SL a long time DX member and known to many.

Vice-President NZART:
Carol ZL2VQ first licensed YL and WARO member, but second female to be elected Vice-president of NZART an office she held for 18 months. The first female to serve in this position was Brenda Bell who was never a licensed amateur radio operator, but as 'second operator' to the Z4AA station at the Shag Valley Station in Otago she became one of the 6 Vice-Presidents when NZART was formed in 1926.(Refer pg.56 Ham Shacks, Brass Pounders and Rag Chewers by Ian Dougherty.)
Cathy ZL2ADK re-elected to NZART Council and joins with Carol ZL2VQ to represent the Central Region; Anne ZL3VR and Jeanne ZL4JG were not available for another term on Council.
DX visitors abound and numerous ZLs travel overseas visiting their sponsored friends and many other amateurs. Most Bulletins contained a record of some of those trips and experiences.

AREC Sections and Car Rally Communications:
A regular schedule of International and National car rallies and other sporting events each year see many members supporting the call for operators for the required communication network to facilitate the safety factor at these events.

AGM:
President Jill O'Donnell ZL2DBO welcomed 38 members to the AGM in Hamilton. A number of changes in the Executive line-up this year as Bev ZL1OS became Vice-President, Jeanne ZL4JG Secretary, Judith Hildreth ZL1JDL Treasurer, with Celia ZL1ALK and Bev Gillman ZL3TCR on Committee.
All appointed officers from last year remained with the exception of Bulletin Editor which became a shared job for Biny ZL2AZY and Joline Beale ZL1UJB. A welcome return to the Bulletin were the profiles of a few of the Executive.
The decision was made to hold the weekly nets around 3.690MHz as we no longer had any members with Novice class licenses.
Gloria Hewer ZL2WGH a 10 year old of New Plymouth received the NZART Youth Achievement Award for highest examination result for 1997 and along with it a 1 year complimentary subscription to WARO.
Aola Johnston ZL1ALE received a 30 year Continuous Membership Certificate.
The NZ WARO Achievement Award and the Myrtle Earland Memorial Rose Bowl were presented to Celia Reed ZL1ALK for outstanding service to WARO over 36 years.

A committee comprising Cathy ZL2ADK, Carol ZL2VQ, Jill ZL2DBO and Biny ZL2AZY was formed to investigate the possibility of a DX-YL meet in the Waikato area about the year 2000.
