Tonight's District net at 1930 hours is our final one in 2020. We will use the W6TRW 2-meter repeater and 440 Rolling Hills repeater cross-link, the 2-meter TAC-1 simplex frequency, our 220 simplex frequency (voice net followed by an NBEMS digital message); the 440 PV-West repeater; and concluding with another NBEMS message on 2-meter TAC-1 simplex. All DCS members and those of the South Bay's city-affiliated disaster amateur radio groups are encouraged to check in on one or more frequencies. Please relay for members you hear calling on simplex who are not heard by net control.

Thank you to all DCS members for serving our County and its Cities during a very difficult year. Our personal lives took unplanned directions starting in mid-March and since then many DCS activities could not be held other than weekly nets and communication exercises from home stations. We did have four major activities during 2020 for which we greatly appreciated our members' participation: the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K in February; Primary Election Night service in early March; supporting LASD's mobile radio re-programming at South Los Angeles and Lomita Stations during four days in September; and serving on General Election night at the Torrance helicopter landing zone on November 3. In recognition of the challenges we've all faced DCS' 48-hour annual service requirement has been waived for 2020. We nevertheless remain ready to serve should a major disaster occur...so please participate in our nets and exercises to ensure your equipment is working. I wish everyone a safe holiday season and all the best for 2021.

We expect operating weekly District nets from home stations well into the first part of 2021 and usually need three net control operators. Combined coverage of the W6TRW 2m and/or K6RH 440 repeaters will enable many to handle our main net without having good simplex coverage. Contact me at [email protected] with any Monday when you can help as net control from your home on any of our frequencies. After tonight's net our weekly messages and nets resume on Monday, January 4, 2021.

You might wish to consider an upgrade or expansion of your existing radio equipment as a holiday present Jerry, T-03, and I can provide recommendations on what to purchase if you need any assistance. You should also consider getting another battery for your handheld radio as batteries do not last forever. About 200-300 charging cycles is the typical useful life for most HT batteries.

Please advise me by December 15 if your LASD Volunteer badge has a December 2020 expiration date shown near the bottom and indicate the V-number on the front of your badge. As with other member badges awaiting re-issuance your existing badge is still valid until the new badges are issued. So far I have only heard from two members with 2020 badge expirations.

This was our first exercise reporting Beaufort Wind Scale measurements...and as events unfolded that morning brisk winds brought the Beaufort Scale to life. If you couldn't participate this time please plan to be involved with our next quarterly Communication Exercise in the 1st quarter of 2021.

On some of our frequencies starting next week we'll be encouraging members checking-in to gain experience reporting various types of disaster-related information. This follows our members in the latter part of 2019 optionally reporting GPS coordinates for certain government facilities and businesses during 2-meter simplex check-ins.

No 440 Rolling Hills Repeater Use Tonight

Our District's W6TRW 2m/440 Rolling Hills cross-linked repeater net tonight will only use the 2-meter side. We've been advised the 440 Rolling Hills repeater unit is away from its hilltop site for several days this week to permit maintenance and re-programming, so please check in this evening using W6TRW (145.320 MHz, - , Tone Squelch, PL 114.8).

Our District nets continue operating from member home stations and in-person DCS meetings remain canceled until further notice. To enhance your emergency communication skills consider operating in the ARRL Field Day contest this weekend (June 27-28) from your home as an individual operator using HF and/or VHF/UHF bands (no repeater contacts allowed on the latter). A change in Field Day rules for 2020 only allows home stations using mains AC power (Class 1-D) to contact and receive points for working other 1-D stations. For full Field Day rules see the ARRL website at: http://www.arrl.org/field-day#rules

Thank you to everyone who checked into last Monday's District simplex nets when I had the chance to operate simplex from my home location. There was very good to excellent signal quality for most check-ins under my worst-case antenna scenario. Due to neighbors being nearby I had to use only a tri-band mobile mag-mount antenna on a pizza pan sitting atop a block wall...but it worked great.

We will resume weekly nets from the Lomita Station DCS room after State and County "Safer At Home" public health orders expire on April 19 or as extended. In the meantime our Monday night nets will operate from member home stations. In the event of a DCS activation members entering the Lomita Station's DCS room are requested to use our hand sanitizer bottle before touching any radio equipment or work surfaces and maintain a safe "social distance" from others. If you feel sick or have a household member with an immune-system disorder do not report for any DCS activities outside your home while COVID-19 contagion continues.

During the current COVID-19 outbreak resulting in Federal, State, and many Local emergency orders we are restricting in-person contacts of DCS members, especially involving members 65+ years of age who must now self-isolate at home for two weeks per Governor Newsom's order. In place of tonight's postponed DCS annual member meeting we will conduct our Districts 3 & 17 nets from several home stations. In the following weeks--unless otherwise advised by the Sheriff's Department or public health authorities--we hope to continue Monday night nets with a limited operator team at the Lomita Sheriff Station after sanitizing weekly all DCS room radios, microphones, work areas, door knobs, and the like. Any DCS member entering our radio room at the Lomita Station is requested to use our hand sanitizer bottle before touching any radio equipment or work surfaces. If you feel sick or have a household member with an immune-system disorder please advise us and do not report for any DCS activities while COVID-19 contagion continues...stay home, seek treatment, and get well. Out of an abundance of caution--starting before tonight's District net--we will be sanitizing weekly all our DCS room radios, microphones, and work areas using a non-bleach Clorox-brand product on the Centers for Disease Control list for cleaning coronavirus and many other viruses from hard surfaces. Please also use our bottle of hand sanitizer when coming to our radio room. While no Districts 3 & 17 members are known to have contracted COVID-19 or been quarantined for it we are taking this situation seriously for the sake of our members and their families. Early each year the Sheriff's Department requires all its employees and volunteers to complete or update their Personal Information Form should an emergency contact be needed. We will have this form available for completion at our March 12 and 14 District meetings. You may also download the form as a fill-able PDF, complete and sign it, then email it to me. The form is on the Countywide DCS website in the Members Only section at: https://lacdcs.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/employees-personal-information.pdf.

Please check-in on simplex even if you don't have GPS coordinates to report. We are saddened to report Frances (Bob) Gorman, T-95, passed away on January 1 at age 98. He also served as city radio officer for the City of Lomita and for many years was a familiar voice on our District nets with a unique cadence, "This is Tom ninety five...Nora six, George Boy, X-ray...good evening." After military service as a pilot starting in World War II Bob had an extensive professional career as a rocket propulsion engineer for TRW and Aerospace Corp. Funeral services will be at Green Hills Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes this Friday, January 17, at 1000 hours.
