Skywave propagation is a radio wave transmission method where waves are reflected or refracted back to Earth from the ionosphere, a layer of the upper atmosphere ionized by the sun. This allows radio signals to travel beyond the horizon, enabling long-distance (intercontinental) communication, particularly in the shortwave frequency bands. The process depends on the frequency of the radio wave and the changing conditions of the ionosphere, which vary by time of day, season, and solar activity. This phenomenon is essential for extended-range communication.

Propagation Modes

The project "Understanding HF Propagation" focuses on near-real-time indicators and explains what they mean. See the sitemap.
