Kittitas County Amateur Radio Club - KCARC
VE Testing and Exams

The Kittitas County Amateur Radio Club will be looking to get a testing program and opportunities established during 2024. Please come back to this page and check for updates.

Getting your FRN (FCC Registration Number)

From Volunteer Examiner Gloria Sharp, WA7GYD

FRN stands for "FCC Registration Number". It's purpose in ham radio is to replace/remove the need for use of a Social Security Number.

It is now required in the Volunteer Examiner / Ham testing activity. The test taker must apply for and receive his or her assigned number before coming to the test session. (Check your current ham license to see if you already have a number assigned to you. On my license it is very small print at the bottom of the top license section. Ten digits long, first 3 are zeroes.) If you don't find one on your license keep reading and find out how to get one.

It's not a hard thing to do, but it might take a little time. This is the easiest way I have found to get yourself an FRN.

Go to www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session

Item #4 there is about the FCC Registration Number, click on it and follow the links provided.

Be sure to write the number down and bring it to the test session.

If you already have an FRN because of some other activity, you should also use that number for the ham radio testing.

Editor's note: For more information on the FCC Registration System, go to: COmmission REgistration System for the FCC (CORES)

Editor's note: Keep track of your FRN and account and login information that you used to create the FRN. You will be required to use this information to renew or upgrade your license, notify the FCC if you move, or file for a vanity callsign.

How to be come a Volunteer Examiner (VE)

For those who are interested in becoming a Volunteer Examiner (VE) in the ARRL network, here is a link to the ARRL page: http://www.arrl.org/become-an-arrl-ve.

It's a three step process to become a VE.

1) There is an online, and hard copy, manual, with online supplemental information. Both PDFs are available for download.

2) There is a downloadable PDF form for the application and test, and it's an open book test.

3) Fax, mail or email your application with real signature to the ARRL VEC (Volunteer Examiner Coordinator).

Once you're accredited, you will receive your credentials in the mail within 3-4 weeks.
