Comments and highlights of the Aug 2024 MW Results

---

The MW station log is complete. Officially the most Kiwi-centric session I have ever experienced here. Top of the MW band rolled off a bit, not as badly as 2023.

Overall MW Highlights and Observations:

--Better than 2023 in every way. Massively Kiwi-centric. Loud signals, plentiful 1 and 2 kw Kiwis.
--Kiwis and total DUs exceeded last year's counts even with 2 days this time vs 4 last year
--Only one good day (Aug 6th) but it was very good.
--New stations heard such as 1521 2QN Solid Gold and 2 kw 621 Rhema (621 khz usually occupied by 50 kw 3RN).
--Crazy loud Radio Fiji One in for most of the morning on 558 Khz. It is never heard like this at Grayland.
--Despite the fewest number of Australians ever, 3 were lower powered ARN (Ace Radio Network) affiliates and 2 X-band stns (400w)
--Coast parallels on 954 and 1323 (only 3 Coast MW stations still exist)
--8 stations from Dunedin, center of the action. Two of these just 1 KW.
--NZL 603, 765, 1161 and 1179 are all // and broadcasting the same stream of Maori pop
--The KTIL spur on 1710 is gone at last after many years of intense QRM. It was heard as far away as Haida Gwaii BC.
--With the 1710 KTIL spur silenced, "Part 15" unlicensed station KHMB was back. This nostalgia formatted station operates with 5 synchronous 100 milliwatt transmitters 579 mi / 931 km distant from the DXpedition site!

We set up on Rockwork 4, the preferred (and most scenic) Hwy 101 pulloff, for this DXpedition.

Dell "2 in 1" 11.6-inch netbook (Win 10) 2.0 TB internal SSD, internal battery power
Wellbrook FLG-100LN broadband amplifier modules (Ideal gain for the antenna used)
60 feet (18.3 meters) of #18 multi stranded copper wire, jacketed (Deployed as a end-fed flag)
Common Mode Choke, self-made, using FT-240 core of type 77 ferrite material
16 and 20 foot segmented fiberglass "Wonderpoles" and weighted (with concrete) tip-resistant stands
4 X tarp clips that clip onto the poles as wire guides; waterproof, quick set up
Thick plastic wrap and zip ties to mount, protect the active antenna module in rain; Needed and used in prior years, not this time.
50 feet RG8X coax with BNC connectors
35AH solar rechargeable self made battery box provides cliffside power for SDRs, active antennas. This DXpedition is 100% battery powered
Backup equipment (not needed) included MSI Wind Netbook w/ 500 GB SSD, Wellbrook ALA100M modules (RF amp and bias tee)
Drone: Yuneec Q500 Typhoon 4K (Available but not flown off the cliffs in 2024)
