Another 3-night October Grayland DXpedition was held at Casa Sea Esta Oct 26, 27 and 28, 2020. Dxers Chuck Hutton, Jeroen Bet and myself were in attendance, with Bruce Portzer joining us for the third night. With high Kp Indexes (3+) throughout our stay I wasn't expecting much but it was an opportunity to tryout antenna improvements, noise abatement and share information and best practices. My logs ended up with an outstanding showing of 83 Japanese stations which was well beyond my expectations. 42 Australians was a pretty good showing for late October, with four stations from Western Australia including a 5 KW 6RN outlet. 23 Alaskans were in nicely including all Anchorage area, Kenai Peninsula and Panhandle stations. 29 Chinese MW stations were identified, on par with the 30 heard from here at CSE in 2019.

We ran into the noise problem we had encountered before at Casa Sea Esta in 2019. Even the worst affected frequencies were the same. Jeroen discovered with his portable receiver that the noise was eminating from the vactrol wires and coax outside. We were sending the hash down the line! Some linear regulated power supplies were substituted in which really helped. That and turning off dubious noisemakers in the house brought it down to practically zero. We never had this problem at Breakwater Inn but we were able to mitigate it at CSE. I have picked up several of the 12 VDC linear regulated supplies for future and home use, and was already using a 5 VDC linear regulated supply for the Perseus.

On the last day we set up a KiwiSDR which took some doing but we got it to work and it was utilized by DXers at locations around the world. I think these will become a fixture at future West Coast DXpeditions. I wish I had paid more attention to the setup process.

I also deployed a 10 x 20 foot LW loop / FLG100LN combo that managed around 15 off-season AUS/NZL/Pacific beacons, and 4 seldom heard Russian Far East NDBs were ID'd using the DKAZ. One new one from Australia's Northern Territory (near Darwin) was also added to the Grayland logs, my first heard from NT at any DX location. At the same time Darwin X-band station 8MM was in on 1656 Khz. Not a coincidence. The well built DKAZ using 31-foot poles performed well for beacons and low MW band as well.

Comments and highlights of the 2020 MW Results

Despite Kp=3 and even worse. the results worked out a bit better than expected. 83 Japan stations down to 100W was an exceptional result considering the Kp; 3 MBC affiliates (10 KW, out of 13 S.Koreans), 23 Alaskans with solid IDs (but no Fairbanks or farther north), 29 of 10 KW+ China stations (CRI, CNR1, many RGD's), etc. DUs include a surprising 42 Australians with five being X-Band and four from distant W.A. 6RN 1269 is a personal record of 5 KW at 9258.5 miles. All 7 AUS states heard. 11 Hawaiians in and the welcome return of 940 KKNE, not heard at Rockwork earlier this year. NZL, Vietnam and Philippines in as well.

KHMB 1710 is a legal unlicensed "Part 15" station using 5 synchronized 100 mw transmitters and is 644 miles / 1036 km distant from the DXpedition site!

All three mornings became good during the dawn enhancement period. 220+ stations ID'd. All MW stations received using a 160-foot DKAZ at 270 degrees. Additional MP3 audio clips being added as time permits.

Being late October the wild late summer deluge of AUS/NZL/Pacific NDBs had subsided into a trickle. We were fortunate to get a few New Zealand beacons including the impressively reliable TM 1630. Australia's PMQ 395 in again as the most distant and the only beacon to break 12000 km. More impressive though was MGD 401, a new one for me from any location and my first NDB from Northern Territory. However it has been reported from NA previously using a California KiwiSDR so I don't get to claim a first on it. The northern path despite a high Kp Index did manage better. OX and ML were very good. The Russian Far East produced 4 NDBs that were quite a surprise. HI 469, BT 482 and SL 505 in particular are rarities and have never been heard at a West Coast DXpedition. Other than using the KPH Pt Reyes Kiwi SDR, SL 505 had never been logged from North America before. The Russians were best on Oct 28 within a half-hour of 11:00. Oct 27 was nearly as good (HI 469 Khabarovsk was in on both days). Oct 29 was a complete bust on LW as sometimes happens.
