Grayland DXpedition October 2016

I attended a two-night Mediumwave DXpedition with Chuck Hutton and Bruce Portzer at the famous DXing locale the Grayland Motel as is usual for me during an October weekend, since my first visit in October 2007. The "Storm of the Century" (As the press was calling it, which did produce an EF-2 tornado at Manzanita, home base for the Rockwork 4 DXpeditions) did not dissuade us from erecting antennas. In fact at set-up time it was calm and sunny after the long drive from Seattle through rain squalls. The dire forecast even scared off the beachcombers who often book rooms during storms so we had the Grayland Motel all to ourselves. We set up a 160-foot DKAZ at 270 degrees true as we did last year. As I pulled in, Chuck and Bruce were out front cutting wires to make one. It performed great as it did last year.

As a special project, I also erected a delta loop with 17 feet per side, feeding a ALA100M for Longwave action as the DKAZ last year was nearly deaf at LW frequencies. Results were outstanding with 7 NDBs from mainland Australia including a couple never reported heard from North America, and plenty of other first rate DX targets. In fact with 11 stations over 11000 km distant this was the finest LW session I have ever experienced. Also in was TM 1630, the New Zealand MW aero beacon, heard on the DKAZ. Longwave results were posted to NDBlist and DGPSlist and can be seen below. Not in were the 16+ French Polynesian beacons heard from Rockwork 4 last year. In plotting the catches using the WWSU "Station Radar" feature, the antenna turned out to be exceedingly directional and needed to be reoriented more southward to get those. The directionality also explains the Rockwork 4 longwave results in which the orientation was more southerly but nothing NW of Australia was heard. I will know to reorient in the future at both DXpedition locations.

The morning of the 15th had the MW band full of Filippinos which was most unusual. Chuck and Bruce found 16 in one recorded file while still on site. Also some good second-tier Japan as the K-index actually dropped to Kp=2 that morning, and plenty of loud Aussies and Kiwis. The next morning on the 16th was terrible overnight, not even Hawaiians were in. Bruce actually went out and checked the antenna. I went back to bed but came back at 14:00 for possible dawn enhancement. Good decision...one of the most stunning turnarounds I've ever experiencd and now conditions were outstanding. About 1 wonderful hour of Japan and Hawaii at vibrant levels, absent earlier, and louder than Day 1. {Example: JOQR Tokyo 1134 Khz} Good IDs from KIPA 1060 Hilo (relaying "102.7 The Beach") on both days from Aloha-land. JOLF 1242 was in long after sunrise (occurring at 14:30 UTC) and still going strong at 15:30 when I finally put down the headphones. Kp=3 this morning. Analysis of the remaining DX recordings is complete and has been added below, soon to include many audio clips. It can also be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet below. Even better results than 2015 are noted in every category, with over 65 AUS/NZ, over 50 Japan, 20+ Philippines, many Pacifics like Tuvalu, Tonga, Guam, Marshalls and even V6AI Yap, FSM on the air late with tropical storm emergency announcements. (This was particularly interesting because I have actually visited Colonia, Yap during my time as a USAF Navigator). The Alaska/Hawaii results with audio clips are posted below separately. The 22 Hawaiians logged is a personal record, thanks in part to a renewed KIPA 1060 which was off the air in 2015. As KHRA 1460 left the air in June 2017, that record may stand for some time.

Another two mornings of great DX were to be enjoyed at Grayland October DXpedition 2016.  Bruce, Chuck and I used the well performing DKAZ. I also had a LW delta / ALA-100M setup that performed wonderfully on LW.

Stormy indeed, but we also had calm, sun and rainbows. Static crashes were prevalent at times. (Click pics for larger view)

The longwave side project used a proven antenna and methods that have been productive in the past. I put aside the vactrol I had planned to experiment with to keep things simple given the wind and rain. The ALA100M was used instead of the FLG100LN for its higher gain and amplification of a short wire loop (50 feet circumference). Nylon ropes and tent stakes were used to lash everything down.  242-degrees was chosen so as to put the Australian east coast on boresight (a Tritium military compass was used for alignment). 200 feet of RG8X was used as feedline so I was able to put the antenna well away from the motel and DKAZ.  For DGPS, the excellent Amalgamated DGPS software was used. NDBs were decoded by ear using Perseus V5 without the use of sonograms or other visual means. The results were so impressive I was taken by surprise. As awesome as the seven mainland Australians were, 242 HN may actually be the finest catch. It is highly elusive and only reported outside Hawaii once before, from Oregon in 2005 by a top DXer. It was actually easy copy at Grayland.

Grayland DXpedition October 2018 My most recent "return to Grayland" after no DXpedition in 2017. A Casa Sea Esta DX experience awaited our 3-man team.
Rockwork DXpedition August 2018 Broke all records for cliffside action, especially LW. MW similar to 2017 which was great! And with a cliff-hanging team of 5 DXers!
Aug 2017 Rockwork 4 DXpedition Excellent conditions on several of the 6 mornings onsite. Spectacular LW and MW with a short, simple antenna.
July 2016 Rockwork 4 International DXpedition My only 2016 visit to the cliffs near Manazanita with a record five DXers, One Canadian and two Japanese DXers outnumbered the two Americans
Bill Whitacre's Grayland Logs from his Feb 2017 DXpedition. With the DKAZ aimed Northwest at 290-300 degrees, the northern path produced 26 Alaskans which is very decent. With audio clips
Grayland 2015 DXpedition log and audio clips Four DXers took part using a DKAZ. My partners were Chuck Hutton, Bruce Portzer and Chris Black
