DX rolls in as dawn breaks on Aug 10

Prime Time at the cliffs...Dawn breaks as the Perseus records incoming DX on Aug 10, 2020. Great morning for Australian NDBs!

Setup at the cliff                     Tom R with antenna spreader                    In the Office
Two DXers, two styles, one awesome cliff                                                Myself with portable flag                                           Cliffside "Office" provides some weather protection

Rockwork DXpedition 2020 Yes, we did hold one on this 10th anniversary of DXpeditioning from these cliffside pullouts. After all, this is one activity that is practically Covid-proof being outdoors on a wind swept cliff, and my one DX partner Gary already recovered from having it with the resultant immunity. My participation was limited to only 4 days but as it turned out a fifth day on either side would have yielded little as these were lackluster mornings per Gary's reporting.

August 8th (favoring NZL) and 10th (favoring AUS) provided most NDB results. The numbers this year did NOT approach the record 73 AUS/NZL/Pac beacons of last year but easily a #2 haul. I have found and ID'd 63 NDBs from this target region, plus some additional "northern path" beacons to include OG 437 from Russia by aiming the antenna to the NW briefly. The last 3 days featured very low noise and would have been ideal for record reception, but the propagation was just not there. Also, reliable NF 260 appears to be off the air. Even so, I ended up with a decent 14 AUS and 8 NZL beacons, exceeding 2018 NDB numbers making this year's NDB results second only to 2019 out of seven DXpeditions here.

MW results have been spectacular thanks to Aug 09, the gift that keeps on giving. The 9th was best single morning for MW I have ever had as a cliff hanger and lifted results to a Rockwork personal best level. 127 DUs identified. Nine "Gold AM" affiliates. 22 of 23 NewstalkZB stations on AM. All Australian states heard. Not bad for around 1.5 hours per session perched on a cliff with a simple antenna.

Comments and highlights of the 2020 MW Results

Conditions were excellent, with signals louder and more robust than 2019, especially on Aug 09. 22 Newstalk ZB affiliates (out of 23 existing, lacking only the one on 1413 Khz). Coast parallels on 1323 and 1359. Nine of the new Gold AM oldies network (formerly R. Sport) down to 1 KW with parallel music but differing announcements. A personal Rockwork record 18 Hawaiians despite a conspicuously missing KKNE 940 (pattern change or temporarily off the air?). Also: 14 Japanese 50KW and over ID'd while the antenna was briefly directed NW, plus several China and S. Korea.

Lots of stations new to my cliffside logs: Kiwis like 1089 Gold and 1305 R. Dunedin, Australians like 1206 2GF, 1188 2NZ and 954 2UE and even Hawaiians like KIPA 1060. The demise of the TAB Trackside network (now silent) with typically 9 Kiwi stations available for cliffside logging proved to be no detriment to reaching the goal of 100+ DUs logged this year. Indeed a personal cliffside record 127 DUs have been identified (74 Kiwis and 53 Aussies) with possibly more to be found. The Kiwi and Aussie counts are both personal bests at Rockwork in 7 visits here

Australian propagation was centered on NSW this time in a big way and the new stations in the log reflect that. However for the first time at the cliff All Australian States were heard thanks to 2 KW 783 8AL (Alice Springs, NT) being in audio, and 50 KW 558 6WA (Wagin, WE) making it in again as the most distant station of the DXpedition at 9,154 miles (14,732 km)
. A spectacular 4-morning MW haul, and August 09 was the best single MW session I have ever had at the cliff. Additional MP3 audio clips may be added to the MW logs as updates to the page.

Comments and highlights of the 2020 LW Results

With only four mornings at the ocean cliffside pullout this year (instead of the usual 5), an impressive 63 NZL/AUS/PAC beacons were identified. This is a bit short of the 2019 record conditions in which 73 such beacons were heard, but it easily beats the 56 NDBs from this region in 2018 (a record at the time), making for a #2 result for the seven Rockwork DXpeditions I have attended. 14 AUS beacons is an excellent result and the most distant NDB ever received here, 302 WYY, was in again. New Zealand beacons were a bit sparse. We also had some northern path success with 437 OG from Russia and many coastal western Alaskans. Seven beacons were new to Rockwork; 294 AN (MAR), 307 NA (FJI), 347 RIC (AUS), 374 BML (AUS), 395 MER (AUS), 405 VK (FJI) and 486 LTV (AUS). Reliable NF 260 was missing, apparently off the air.

Partner Gary enjoyed record breaking NDB receptions this year with 50 watt 366 SF and later (on the 13th after my departure) with 25 watt 362 WK, an outstanding achievement on ultralight equipment. It was rather surprising that WK (which was loud) didn't bring any of its 25 watt NZL friends to the party, but they were indeed missing in action this time as was all of the South Island. Australia fared much better with 14 stations in (tying the Rockwork record) with several at only 49 watts. Three of the four AUS beacons noted above were new to Oregon as well as Rockwork, but all have been previously logged in N.A. using the KPH Pt. Reyes, CA Kiwi SDR or by myself at Grayland, WA last year. 8 NZL / 14 AUS was this year's DU total.

As for DGPS results, the Australians permanently shut down their entire system on July 1, 2020. The end of an era as satellite augmentation has become standard. The US system including Alaska has also been permanently shut down (which has freed up 314 SPY, sure to appear in many logs this coming season). All TWEB broadcasts over NDBs in Alaska were turned off permanently on Jan 01, 2020.

I am pleased with the 2020 NDB results and am looking forward to next time at these beautiful ocean cliffs. With this year's inspiring "personal best ever" MW results and a #2 NDB result, there is no doubt about returning next year. Update: I'm booked for Aug 02-06 2021. There will be 5 of us DXing on the cliffside pulloffs on some mornings.

I was able to use Rockwork 4 exclusively once again, but partner Gary had to defer to Rockwork 6 on Aug 7 (due to a full house with sleeping squatters).
