Comments and highlights of the October, 2023 MW Results

The MW station log is now complete, less MP3 files. In addition to the many up and down MW catches from Australia, Japan and China and at least one MW Russian beacon we also had some domestic action of interest on 1710 Khz. Not only was the Travis AFB, CA TIS station in all night with big signal but briefly after sunrise KHMB was in from Half Moon Bay, CA all alone with ID. This legal, unlicensed "Part 15" station uses 5 synchronized Hamilton Rangemaster AM1000 100 mw transmitters for a total of 0.5 watt. I have heard it here only once before and not this good.

At least 25 Alaskans were in very early in the evening of Oct 18, including two Fairbanks and both Nome stations with full IDs. Yet another good October for AK and the 4th straight with 20 or more! 17 Hawaiians ID'd as well for a very good haul. 42 combined AK + HI was only exceeded once (in 2022) by one station. Fine opening to NZL as local dawn approached on the 18th. AUS X-band stations in nicely at that time as well. China/Japan/Korea much diminished from last year and mostly just the big guns were in with a few 2nd tier stations in northern regions. Mediocre northern path condx prevailed after the Alaskans of early evening on the 18th.

Overall MW Highlights and Observations:
--25 Alaskans is well above average, and included Fairbanks
--17 Hawaiians, also good. KNUI & KHLO heard at all 3 DXpeditions this year
--Russian MW beacon TF on 786
--Lively Aussie X-Band included "new one" SEN from Adelaide on 1629
--Radio Hawkes Bay, NZL 1431 was new
--KHMB 1710 1/2-watt station heard well at 644 miles / 1036 km or 1288 miles per watt
--Northern Path Asian stations were lackluster and nothing special heard. No Philippines, Vietnam or S. China
--The DKAZ vactrol was apparently not operating / fine tuned. Graveyards were a jumble of ESPN stations and no KIFW.

Comments and highlights of the October, 2023 NDB Results
Noise issues were negligible this time as linear power supplies and common mode chokes have practically eliminated equipment and house electrical noise. As for the wind turbines, they usually were pointing south and while turning the ever present noise pattern was much reduced. Better shielding off the sides? At any rate this made for excellent LW reception from Alaska, just a touch below last year with new (for me at Grayland) MHM 227 and 4 out of 5 active AK's north of the Arctic Circle noted. 14 Pacifics was a pretty good result for Grayland considering the solar cycle, decommissionings and lacking the advantage of the Oregon cliffs and their steep dropoff for these long wavelengths. Max LW distance was 8400 km. French Polynesia was surprisingly good this time with 6 all-time new loggings for Grayland and WA state. We also heard a few Russians such as rare 469 HI Khabarovsk and Okha's MW beacon 786 TF.

Incidentally last year's unknown MW beacon 786 OI has been positively located to Okha (Novostroyka) Airport on Northern Sakhalin Island, Russia as the runway 13 marker. Bill got the counterpart NDB for the opposite runway 31 at this same airfield 786 TF on his September 2023 DXpedition here and it was in for us at this DXpedition as well on all 3 nights, most clearly on Oct 20 with a good signal. This change was discovered through official up to date Russian airport publications such as: HERE which give precise Lat-Long coordinates and pictorials. The switch-over from the former 437 Khz beacons (OG 437 was well heard here in WA) at this airport occurred on or near September 2022. The active beacon depends on the wind and runway in use. Khabarovsk uses the same setup with 469 HI or UF depending on active runway.
