Another impressive session at the Oregon Cliffs near Manzanita draws to an end. Records were broken with Longwave NDBs this year: 33 Australian beacons ID'd!

Rockwork DXpedition 2021 The 11th annual Rockwork DXpedition would be my 8th time at the cliffs. I arrived in Manzanita on Aug 02 and realized I had left home without an important cable and spent much of the night trying to come up with a workaround (I was successful).

Aug 03: I arrived at Rockwork 4 to find the other five DXers already there and set up. Amazingly, there was room for me too. Set up for me took a long time as my pre-cut wires were missing so I had to cut pieces of backup wire and tie it together to be viable. I wound up having only 45 feet of wire up and was getting intermittant buzzing as well. It seemed like a very good morning with the "echo effect" on several frequencies meaning two identical stations slightly out of sync. I thought my recordings were ruined but upon analysis I did get clean reception for most of the morning. Lovely weather but I was too beat to fly the drone after the session. We took a group picture instead. 6 DXers on the pullout was the most ever.

Aug 04: More work the night before to cut two new 30-foot wires using a tape measure. Now I was ready for normal operations. This time I was the first arrival after Craig. I went over and had a chat with him about the lovely morning with the Milky Way going down to the sea and the upcoming Perseid meteor shower. Then I got set up much more quickly and was going before the others arrived. However it was a rather mediocre morning on the bands. The last session with the big group.

Aug 05: Just Gary and I now. I arrived and got set up before Gary arrived. It was a good Australia morning on both bands. LW was hopping and I knew it would be a good haul there with a powerful 395 PMQ on a velvety black background. On MW I quickly noticed a strong 2WEB with IDs and went over to tell Gary but he was already on it. MW seemed to favor Australia with the whole band in including the X-band. We had a fellow pull in who had noticed us here previously on his commute and was curious about what on earth we were up to. He seemed intrigued.

Aug 06: Pouring rain in the pitch black of night with passing logging trucks spraying me down as well. I got soaked setting up. But now I could go inside the car to my "office" to get some relief. It didn't seem like a special morning but it was rather good after all, especially LW with all 23 active French Polynesian beacons in. "More FM" 531 was blasting in, and the X-band was in again as well for full spectrum DXing. The medium wave beacon 1630 TM from New Zealand was in all 4 mornings.

Amazing trans-Pacific MW and LW reception this time was superior to all my previous results even with the steep rise in Cycle 25. Like fishing, you never really know what to expect but we always do well here the first two weeks of August.

Comments and highlights of the 2021 MW Results

As mentioned earlier we had some unusal Australian focused DX on the 5th with loud 2WEB. The 3rd seemed quite NZL-centric with nice echoes from multiple stations out of sync. A solid parallel for 6WA was found on 8/5 at 1312 // 612, and 8AL from Alice Springs was also logged // 891 for all AUS states heard, also accomplished last year. I struck out on the 3rd with a brief rise of Gold news rather than ABC news on 558, but AUS was better in every way on the 5th and a solid parallel was bound to be found. I had something on 1152 which needs further investigation, possibly 6PNN but no ABC Newsradio parallels available. Ten Gold AM affiliates heard this time around, one more than last year but only 20 Newstalk ZB (out of 23 existing) for me this time, down 2 from last year. Coast parallels again, but this time on 954 Khz // the ever reliable 1323 Khz. 7 SENZ affiliates (out of 9) of the sports entity that took over silent TAB Trackside. An above average 17 Hawaiians were logged.

Aug 03 was a wild session with different stations rising up and then being replaced minutes later with different stations. Very unstable but really good for numbers. Aug 05 was just excellent for Australia and largely responsible for the unusual ratio of Kiwis to Aussies, but NZL always wins out at Rockwork, this time as well with 83 NZL and 74 Australians. 157 DUs is way better than I have ever done at any DXpedition including Grayland. Combined results for the 4 SDR DXers was 92 NZL and 87 AUS (179 DUs), a West Coast DXpedition record for DUs and Kiwis.

A log spreadsheet is
HERE for comparison with the other partners' spreadsheet log, or for sorting or other purposes. The above log has MP3s and I will be adding to these as time permits. I'm sure there are more stations that were missed but one has to have a stopping point. The recorded files can be revisited when time permits.

Comments and highlights of the 2021 LW Results

With four mornings at the ocean cliff pullout again this year, it was the final 2 days that filled the logs with record numbers of DU and Pacific NDBs. Aug 05 brought in a record haul of 34 Australian beacons. And the following day Aug 06, a rainy soaker that made one question even getting up before dawn, provided for excellent French Polynesia. All 23 stations operating there were heard for the first time in one session. Another AUS beacon (#35) was in as well. Both days produced different NZL stations to result in an above average 9 NDBs including two from the South Island. And for the Pacific it was a mixed bag of several easy stations being absent while seldom heard rare beacons were being heard. Alaskans (and OG from RSE) were in as usual even though the antenna was not turned NW this year. 16 stations , all Australians, were new to Rockwork this DXpedition. Some observations:

--35 Australians were identified on Aug 05 & 06. This vastly eclipses the old record of 14 for Rockwork and 16 for a West Coast DXpedition (Grayland).
--Two stations were North American firsts, not previously heard even with the excellent KPH Pt. Reyes KIWI. 383 SGE and 413 BDV joined the "received from NA" club exclusively at Rockwork.
--The Queensland-centered propagation brought in different stations than the NSW-centered conditions of recent years. 302 BUD (Qld) over WYY (Tas) and 407 WDH (Qld) replaced SWH (Vic). WDH is listed as 15 watts in WWSU.
--French Polynesia is comprised of the four island groups OCE, MAR, TUA and AUI.  341 MG has been reported from only 2 locations: Easter Island and Rockwork. All 23 active stations were in for the first time in a single DXpedition.
--Some of the "regulars" like 366 PNI, 403 TUT and 348 HN were not heard. No NOTAMS were issued for these NDBs so the reason for their absence is unknown.
--293 CDU was found in the recorded file coming in loudly prior to being overcome by COM. A submitted log using the KPH Kiwi caused me to review it and there it was. The most distant NDB I have yet received.
--The final compilation was 85 DU/Pacific stations, breaking the Rockwork 2019 previous record of 73.
