Palos Verdes Half Marathon - Other Hours

  • Amateur operators are needed to support the Palos Verdes Half Marathon
  • It was the country’s second-oldest continuously run marathon until it evolved into a Half Marathon, 10k and 5k in 2014. 
  • Participants start and finish above the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. 
  • The course follows the road through residential neighborhoods with million dollar homes and flows along scenic coastal cliffs with views of Catalina Island in the distance..

The Great California Shakeout

  • LMT received: 19 DCS member and 7 city member check
    ins with simulated availability, simulated city SitReps from 3 Area G cities with city radio groups and 4 simulated city SitReps from DCS members deployed to Area G city halls without city radio groups.
  • Member availability was forwarded to the County net
  • NBEMS SitReps were forwarded to the City of Manhattan Beach remote EOC simulating the EOB. Simulated response to the resource requests was generated and sent

  • The Lomita Fair originated in 1982 and has since become a popular annual event and one of the largest and longest running fairs in the Los Angeles Area.
  • DCS participation was appreciated and publically acknowledged by the Deputy in charge.  We were a bit short staffed which meant we were continuously very busy over the three days. Some members served multiple shifts. Please consider volunteering next year.

ARRL Field Day - Other Hours
  • Amateur radio's annual Field Day demonstrating how hams provide emergency communication with portable power runs from 1100 hours Saturday, June 22, to 1100 hours Sunday, June 23 (with setup before and take-down afterwards).
  • Districts 3 & 17 members participated at Field Day sites of the King Harbor Yacht Club Amateur Radio Association, Palos Verdes ARC, South Bay ARC, Hughes ARC, United Amateur Radio Club and W6TRW ARC.
  • DCS operated a Field Day site at the Fairplex in Pomona

Cal OES Southern Region Radio Rodeo
  • In the first hour we operated local District nets on 3 frequencies taking position reports from the cities and individuals checking in
  • We reported those results to SCC operating on 2 frequencies.  
  • We also monitored the OA to REOC checkins on 8 frequencies
  • Operating location at the Torrance Courthouse parking lot had a setup almost rivaling Field Day with furniture; food, four masts to operate on 2-meters, 220, 440, 6-meters with a 2 element beam; a 69' end-fed long-wire HF antenna coupled with a 9:1 matching box and 75 feet of coax for 60-meters; and plenty of battery power.

  • We especially thank Jim, T-228 for guiding us through the process to obtain a permit to legally use the Torrance Courthouse lot.

Countywide DCS Annual Meeting
at the Los Angeles Regional Crime Lab

Everyone who attended the Annual Meeting was treated to an excellent tour as well as a very informative presentation about the forensic science done at the crime lab The 15 Attendees from our Districts

Emergency Operations from the LMT Parking Lot
  • Our station set-ups tested a worse-case situation from the station parking lot
  • Generally we had no problems, although simplex signals with the west side of Rancho Palos Verdes and Mahattan Beach were sometimes challenging.

Los Angeles Marathon - Other Hours

  • Over 24,000 athletes from all 50 states and more than 63 countries set out from Dodger Stadium to the Finish Line in Santa Monica
  • Amateurs staffed the water stations, medical aid stations Multi-agency Command Center (MACC), the start and finish lines
  • Not all positions were staffed
  • Operations went smoothly even though the volume of traffic to the MACC was higher than last year
  • DCS members participating were:

Redondo Beach Superbowl 5/10K
  • Once again Districts 3 & 17 supported the Redondo DSW organization for the 41st Redondo Beach Super Bowl 5K/10K Race
  • The 10 DCS members that braved the rain and help make the operation very sucessful were: 
    • Deane Staff 50, Matthew T-87, Ray T-88, Mike T-100, Mike T-109, Curtis T-124, Norm T-219, Steve, T-227, Jeff T-230 and Robb, T-231. 
  • Special thanks to Ray T-88 for bringing his equipment and providing a professional Net Control operation and to PVE NART for the use of their repeater, providing 100% solid hand held radio coverage throughout the course.
