Palos Verdes Half Marathon

What began as a picturesque marathon in the 1960s, has earned a reputation throughout the running community as one of the nation’s most challenging and iconic races. In fact, it was the country’s second-oldest continuously run marathon until it evolved into a Half Marathon, 10k and 5k as part of the Lexus LaceUp Running Series in 2014.

Ride With the Tide - Other Hours
The Ride with the Tide™ Bike Tour (formerly the Rat Beach Bike Tour) is a 13 city bike tour in distances of 62 miles "Century", 31 miles "Half Century" or 15.5 miles "Quarter Century" rides originating from Torrance "Rat" Beach and rolling through the beautiful coastal cities (and historic / iconic destinations, piers, etc) of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, LAX Area and San Pedro, Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates.

  • The County and District nets were conducted with portable power and antennas from the Lomita Sheriff Station's rear parking lot to simulate conditions if the station's DCS room or antenna tower became unusable.

2016 Los Angeles County Sheriff's Volunteer Association Law Enforcement Training Conference
  • Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Service Center in South Whittier
  • Attending from Districts 3 and 17 were:  Bob, T-22; Mordy, T-92; Chuck, T-139; Cynthia, T-220; Terry, T-225; Kathi, T-226; and Diana, Staff 60.  
  • Five VOPs from Lomita Station also attended along with seven volunteers from Manhattan Beach PD 
  • Volunteers came from as far as Ojai PD in Ventura County and Escondido PD in San Diego County

Islands on the Air DXpetition NA-066 Catalina
- Other Hours
  • Radio Society of Great Britain's Island on the Air Program DXpetition to Catalina
  • Four of our District members participated in a five-day amateur radio DXpedition near Two Harbors on Catalina Island through Sunday that set up two full-fledged HF stations for the Islands On The Air program. 
  • The team worked over 900 other amateur stations in 48 states, seven Canadian provinces, and 24 countries despite marginal band conditions and winds gusting to 42 mph limiting operation on the first two days. Ray, T-88, was the DXpedition leader with Bob, T-22, and Diana, Staff 60, also on the team that carried over 1,000 pounds of gear including for logistics support. Additionally Jerry, T-03, served from the mainland as a DXpedition "pilot."

  • Emergency operations with public safety agencies under field conditions
  • Radio Operator Information
  • Staff 50 served as lead operator in the Multi-Agency Coordination Center at the City of Los Angeles EOC
  • Staff 60 was lead operator at net control next to the finish line in Santa Monica
  • DCS members from Lost Hills, Crescenta Valley, and East Los Angeles stations operated at points on the course with other hams from Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties.

Operating along this year's Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K route were: Deane, Staff 50, as Shadow to the Race Director; Matthew, T-87, at Mile 1; Ray, T-88, at the Medical tent; Mike, T-100, at the Start/Finish line; Curtis, T-124, at Mile 5; Diana, Staff 60, at Mile 6; and Norm, T-219, as Net Control operator atop the Crowne Plaza Hotel parking structure.
