GW4RWR - Amateur radio - my take on it.

Introduction:

Hello, My early exposure to amateur radio was when I asked my dad what the morse code was saying from his bedside GEC Stargazer radio (40m, no BFO). He had no idea, but indulged me by imagining some exciting messages. In 1980 he gave me a pair of Tandy 49.86MHz handhelds. These were purportedly 70mW out, more like 70uW, I think, looking back; I managed to extend their range by connecting a 12V battery in place of the PP3, and fiddling with its antenna.
Later that year, a new member, GW3RUE, to dad's Rotary club gave a talk about amateur radio, showing them his FT-7. Dad put me in touch with him. Santa brought a brand new FRG-7 that year. I self studied and the following november sat the RAE at Llandrillo. I was licenced in 1982 at the age of fifteen. Once I'd learnt morse code, the current call was obtained in 1983. Decades later, I still find it amazing how information is transmitted by wireless.

My main interest is long distance radio propagation at VHF. I'm especially intrigued by tropospheric propagation. This is very weather dependent, so two days are rarely alike.

In recent years, I'm spending more time on construction.
