Incident Command System, or ICS, is a method of organizing a response to an emergency situation. Its structure is generated from the bottom up, so that a response can be as large and complex or as small and simple as the need warrants.

ICS was created by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Personally, I think every ARES member who is at all interested in serving "in the field", shoulder-to-shoulder with our served agencies, ought to be at least conversant with ICS; it will greatly facilitate communication with those served agencies when we can speak the same terminology.
