ARESCO D6 covers all of Park, Lake and Chaffee counties. The combined land area is both huge and sparsely populated. The EC for district 6 is Padre Bova, WØWPD, an all-around good guy and my next-door neighbor. Our AEC is Ray Thompson, WØIVB. Now, as you may have guessed, CO/6 County is a rural area; Lake County has the city of Leadville, but for the most part, our district covers a lot of little towns and much ranchland. As such, the character of the population is one of self-reliance. During a snow storm which closed Denver International Airport (11 April 2001), while both F.E.A.T. and District 24 were activated, Park County just ran along. Consequently, we in District 6 are seldom called to service, compared to our big-city bretheren. However, when we are, it can often be, ahhh, strenuous. On 12 June 2000, the Bailey area was hit with the Hi Meadow fire, which consumed some 12,000 acres of forest. This kind of thing is a constant concern for those who live in Colorado's high country; the region is arid, and also prone to lightning strikes, since the elevation is high. Many of the projects in which I've engaged revolve around public service work. Most notable, I think, is the standard power harness. However, there are a lot of other things which are, of course, also useful for typical public service work. Got an Arrow Antenna? Those are real nice, since they pack up so well; I've built a bigger version of one for mobile ops. Incidents on which I've served |
