Pinzgauers![]() A Pinzgauer 710M with Dunlop tires. Photo from www.real4x4.com. A Pinzgauer is an ex-military vehicle made by Steyr-Puch; they are still made today, in England. Their primary mission is as a transport vehicle; the ones being imported from Switzerland today were meant to transport either troops or cargo (up to 1 ton) over moderately difficult terrain. The back is covered by canvas, and the seats fold down to form a diamond-plate deck. They have independent front and rear differential lockers, 4WD (of course) and they're not too much bigger than a Jeep. Compared to a Unimog, they're smaller, of course, and not quite as capable off-road: their suspension limits travel more than a 'mog, and it's not uncommon to see 'em lifting a wheel. Still, they are amazing vehicles. The most common configuration is designated a 710-M, with the canvas on the back, and four wheels. A 712-M is a six-wheel configuration. Replace the 'M' with a 'K' and you get a very nice hard-topped version, with an auxilliary heater in the back. The 710-K is generally used as a radio Pinz, with three forward-facing seats in the back, and two more doors to get in to those seats. |
