The Tube Project

Crystals   Educational   Keying   Parts

I checked on Antique Radio Supply for a 330V xformer -- $53 without 5 or 6.3V. What it means to me is that if I didn't have a radio to scrounge, new parts would be probably more expensive than the AC-1 kit. Bottom line: find your self a radio to part out.

  1. A two tube xmtr Kirk's find, I think.
  2. But Kirk is building the 6L6 one-tube xmtr with the 5U4G p.s. on the same bread pan.
  3. Dave Tabbutt has a home-brew rig: The tube compliment in novice homebrew I am getting is = 5z4 - Full wave rectifier for power supply, metal jacket. 6Au6 - Vacuum tube, pentode RF-IF sharp cutoff amplifier. 6AQ5A - Audio power output beam, tetrode vacuum tube (final).
  4. Roger just bought a Globe Chief Deluxe, working, but rusty. Needs a new power cord and cleaning up. Does anybody have a soda blasting rig? I still want to build a scratch xmtr so don't count me out of the project.

  8. qrp xcvr $10 Pixie II -- no tubes
  9. K5DH's 807 CW Transmitter

"If you want to buy a power supply, two great candidates are the Heathkit HP-23 and HP-23A." These are solid state, not tube based in case the glow is essential [n4kdr]

  10. Borden Radio -- TT1A kit TT1A 2 Band CW transmitter kit Introductory price is only $129!

"The TT1A now comes with custom made acrylic frame! These fine kits are made in China to the highest quality standards used in the USA. All parts are the best that you can get and the design is a combination of old tried-and-true circuitry with an ultra-modern twist. The tubes are of Chinese manufacture and are top notch in quality. The tubes come with the kits and should provide many years of service. However, if you need replacement tubes, we can provide these for you.

The TT1A works at 7.030 and 14.060. However, crystal sockets are used in the kit, offering a more flexible frequency switching. Crystals ranging from 60m 20m can be plugged in to work without altering the tank coil."

  11. Bausatz AC-1 Kit "Hi Roger , still 9 kits available. I guess they will be sold before x-mas- hi. Price for complete kit is 189 (235 U$D) Euro with all part's one coil-form and one (1) crystal of your choice (3560, 7030, 7040, 10106). I'm out of FT-243 crystals, have only FT-241 crystals- please note attached picture. S+H: 38 (47 U$D) Euro. Payment: Please Paypal in Euro to: [email protected] After receipt of money I will ship your kit.

I would like to offer more kits, also 6SK7 Receiver or so and also to a lower price. But the big issue is where to get 300 -500 good new varaible capacitors, coil-forms etc. for a acceptable price. It make no sense to start a project with prices for variable cond. each 30 USD or so-."

Crystals
[I validated some of these.] "HF crystals in FT-243 holders can be a challenge to locate. Many show up at hamfests, but few are on useful amateur frequencies! I'm aware of two places to buy new, cut-to-your-frequency, FT-243 crystals: "
  • JAN Crystals, PO Box 60017, Fort Myers, FL 33906-6017, (800) 526-9825.
  • PR Crystals, 2735 Avenue A, Council Bluffs, IA 51501, (712) 323-7539.
  • AF4K Products -- 243 crystals for $16 typically

Found on QRZ from K9STH: " Is the crystal a "real" FT-243 and NOT one from AF4K which is actually an HC18/U or HC49/U crystal installed in an FT-243 holder? [emphasis mine n4kdr] Such operation can be caused by a crystal with low activity. If the crystal is a "real" FT-243 then disassemble the crystal and wash the "blank" in a bath using dish washing liquid in water. Rinse in clear water and dry carefully with a soft cloth. Reassemble the crystal. This often helps get the crystal activity back where it needs to be. If the "crystal" inside the holder is a sealed HC18/U or HC49/U, then not much you can do."
