The Bird under construction

Headers

I tried a few sets of headers, and the BBK 351 Swap headers #15690, came very close. They fit the engine, body, bellhousing just fine, but since they were designed for a 5 speed, so the space between the collectors is too narrow. The space between the primaries in the collectors is exactly the same as the width of the pan mount on the AOD. With the bolt holes in the flanges on the sides, it would need them turned to fit a C-4.Depending how ;ow you mount the engine, the steering shaft clears if you replace the rag joint with a Flaming River low profile U Joint. You could use there standard u joints if you notch the center hole in the top motor mount to allow the motor to move 1/4 inch farther back or use a set of rack off set bushings from MN12performance.

I had the use of a set of these, but they were new, and the ceramic coated ones. I left the bubble rap on them so I would not scratch them. If they would of cleared my AOD, I would of unraped them and kept them. These are some very nice headers. I wish I had decided on a C-4 now. If you have a 5 speed or C-4, you may want to look into these. They will fit both of them.

Lots of room around the headers

The headers tuck up REAL nice.

The headers clear the steering shaft fine, but come very close to the U joint

This show the headers a little, but would be less showing with the
trans hooked up, and the rear of the engine raised to nornal position.
The collectors run parellel to the floor with the engine level

I decided to see if I could use a set of 3/8 header flange adapters, used to connect some larger tube headers to the heads, to move the headers out 3/8 on each side to clear the AOD. I inserted a 3/8 inch thick nut between the header and the head at each end to simulate adding the flanges. This did allow the headers to clear the AOD, but put the front tube too close to the steering U joint with my engine set at it lowest position possible. A set of off set bushings may be able to solve this.

If BBK could be convinced to make these same headers for a Mustang with an AOD, we would be in good shape. These may work on a 5.0 with a 5 speed. They are tucked up very nice on the 351 based engine, so being 1 inch lower would not be a big problem. Since the 5.0 is 1 inch narrower at the heads, these would most likely have more room at the steering U joint. Worth a try I would think if some one is in the middle of a swap, and has a 5 speed.

I am using the BBK 351 Shorty Swap headers for now, but will put 1 3/4 Lpng Tubes on it in the Spring.
