The city of Melbourne from Brighton Beach

VK3 is the call area for the state of Victoria. The City of Melbourne is the capital of VK3. The suburban sprawl of the city extends for a radius of about 50+ kilometres. It can take more than 2 hours to traverse from one side of the city to the other.

The city is built on the Yarra river and around Port Phillip Bay. The 'bay' tends to regulate the weather extremes in the suburbs surrounding it. Average daytime temperatures vary from around 10 degrees Celsius in winter to 40 degrees in the height of summer. The wettest months are in the Spring around September although 'tropical' type downpours can cause flash flooding in the Summer period from December to March.

The temperature generally gets hotter as one heads north. The mountains to the North East (Alpine National Park) have snow in the Winter and provide good 4 WD touring. Other touring destinations are the Otway ranges, the Big and Little deserts amongst others.

Most of the pictures in the VK3 Gallery are from what is now known as the Alpine National Park. I have spent 25 years touring the area by motorbike and four wheel drive. Most of the Hut photos are over 20 years old. Mitchell's Homestead was burnt down in 1987. In the summer of 1997-98 the area around Arbuckle Junction and the Mt. Wellington Plateau was devastated by bushfires. Major bushfires were also experienced in VK1,2 & 3 in the summer of 2002-03
