About VK3EDW

Mobirise

My name is John Gilbert and I was first licensed in England in 1972 and held the call G4CEB. My main interests were ham radio competitions and weather satellite imagery reception.

When the Sussex 10m Beacon closed , GB3SX, (early 1980's) I moved it to the Slough Ionosonde site and obtained the Call Sign GB3RAL (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) which is still in use now. The Beacon has now moved to Chiltern where the Laboratory is located and operates on several frequencies. I was also a member of the RSGB Propagation Studies Group.

I moved to Australia in 1986 and was issued the call VK3EDW. I did not operate much due to work commitments but started to operate through AMSAT satellites in 1994. I now operate digital modes on the HF bands and have a keen interest in low power, QRSS, WSPR and QRPP, operation.

My professional career was heavily HF biased, with HF Ionosonde design and installation in many countries. HF Radar experience on the JORN OTHR until 1997, then consulting work on Surface Wave Backscatter Radar. I have also designed HF antennas for both professional and Ham use.

I am located in the Dandenong hills east of Melbourne in a small village in the Sherbrooke forest called Kallista. Being in a valley operation has it's problems with regard to radio propagation.

I hope you find the site interesting and please feel free to drop me a note through the contact page.
