SX8Z, SV1DPI/8: Kythira Island EU113 - 2009

sx8z qsl cardJuly 2009.

Dimitris SV1CIB had the idea to go in Kythira. EU113 (the IOTA number of Kythira Island) is one of the most wanted Greek IOTA for many IOTA hunters.

So we decided to give a try for IOTA contest. The team was Vasilis SV1DPJ, Nikos SV3BSF, Dimitris SV1CIB and me: Kostas SV1DPI.

Me and Nikos arrived in Kythira at 22 of July 2009, just 4 days before the contest. Our plan was to have some holidays with our families and prepare the antennas with some pre-contest activity, as we did. Dimitris and Vasilis would arrived Friday at 24.

We spent about 10 hours driving to reach in Kythira. We were there late in the afternoon. Next morning we setup the antenna: it was just a 5 meters (15 feet) tall vertical tuned with an external tuner. We put a radial kit also, special made by SV3BSF... I had tried the same antenna in Crete, like SY9DPI with good results. After a while SV1DPI/8 was on the air from EU113. Pileup was big both on cw and ssb and I was very pleased. I had not much time to spend as the most time was dedicated to family but every time I could find some free time near on hf, I was on the air.

sx8z qsl backSV1CIB and SV1DPJ arrived in Kythira island on Friday morning. They had a hard trip all night to be in time. We decided to put the antenna in a better position and to go for swimming and rest before the contest starts.

Unfortunately when the owner of the house saw us to change the antenna's location was ungry as he thought that we put a second antenna. After some explanations and the fact that Nikos used to work in police, saved our antenna...

After all these, we started the contest with Vasilis SV1DPJ trying to manage the pileup. The call used for the contest was SX8Z. The rythm was quite good and we really enjoyed it. Finally we managed about 1200 qsos!! We stopped the contest 2 hours earlier because we wanted to be in time for the ferry boat.

Unfortunately were not 1st Greece in Low power category as another team consisted of SV1JG and SV1RP was better. They had better antennas for sure and something we hadn't. But finally we are very pleased with our score and with ouselves. We are already search for the next one...
