ARRL January VHF Contest

Jeff AH6IX and Ron AH6RH encourage amateur radio operators in Hawaii to participate in the annual ARRL January VHF Contest.

ARRL's VHF contest for January 2014 is scheduled for the weekend of Sat January 18 9:00 am to Sunday January 19 6:00 pm. It was a good way to get into the spirit of Field Day and contesting in general. Click here for more details.

Suggested frequencies for the state of Hawaii:

  • 50.120 SSB
  • 144.200 SSB
  • 146.55 or 146.58 FM
  • 223.500 FM
  • 446.00 FM
  • 1294.500 FM

Grid squares scheduled to be active for the event are BL11 (East Oahu) and BL01 (West Oahu). Other grid squares are being sought. You can get a map of the grid squares in Hawaii by clicking on this link.

As a follow-on to the presentation at the EARC General Membership meeting May 17, 2011 and as a teaching aid, you can view a copy of the paper log to get an idea of how to log, then score for the event as a Rover station. If you intend to submit a paper log, remember that the log has to be hand-written according to the rules.

If you are submitting a paper log, make sure to check the ARRL web page. complete both the log sheet and the summary sheets for submission.

UH Satellite Ho'oponopono-2

Hawaii amateur radio operators are involved and supporting the University of Hawaii's second student-built satellite Ho'oponopono-2, and the first one anticipated to reach space. The team is composed of graduate and undergraduate students includes a number of amateur radio operators. Ho'oponopono-2 is a space radar calibration satellite, and you can view the animated concept video. You can see the launch profile at the Cubesat.org web page.

The launch occured on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Launch day video is available on YouTube.

Ron Hashiro AH6RH awarded ARRL Pacific Division 2013 Ham of the Year Award

Bob Schneider AH6J, ARRL Pacific Section Manager, informs that the recipient of the 2013 award for the ARRL Pacific Division Ham of the Year is Ron Hashiro, AH6RH. You can see the article at the ARRL Pacific Section web page.

Tropical Storm Flossie approaches the Hawaiian Islands

Tropical Storm Flossie approaches the Hawaiian Islands from the east. Expected arrival in Hawaiian waters is on Monday, July 30. Stations are encouraged to double check and refresh your preparedness kits. National Weather Service web page.

Stations should monitor the SCD VHF Repeater System for the SKYWARN net. The first net was held on Sunday, July 29 at 7:00 pm.

Net operations will commence at 10:00 am Monday, July 29 on these linked repeaters.

State Civil Defense

  • 147.04+ no PL, Mauna Loa, Big Island

NWS SKYWARN will run the net monitoring for weather reports and other traffic. SCD RACES and DEM RACES will monitor for damage reports or other information for State Civil Defense and (Oahu) Department of Emergency Management.

Sometime in the afternoon or early evening as the storm approaches Molokai, the repeaters will be delinked and two separate net operations (State and Oahu) will start.

EARC Mini Field Day, Saturday August 10, 2013. 4:00 - 11:00 pm

The EARC has scheduled a mini Field Day for Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Hawaii Kai Boat Ramp from 1600-2300. This is a potluck event. EARC Event Web Page.

Governor signs HB980 into law as Act 74, May 20, 2013 11:30 am in the Executive Office

Governor Neal Ambercrombie signed the mobile electronics bill HB980 into law as Act 74 on May 20, 2013 11:30 am in the Executive Office. House Bill 980 supersedes the county regulations on mobile cellular telephone and land mobile radio use. The exemption to use amateur radio while mobile has been preserved. 2013 Hawaii State Legislature

January 30, 2013

There are two bills before the 2013 Hawaii State Legislature that affects mobile cellular telephone use and amateur radio. Amateur radio operators are encouraged to submit testimony. House Bill 980 and Senate Bill 1211 if passed will supersede the county regulations on mobile cellular telephone use. Click here for further details.

75 meter Geratol net

January 12, 2013

Ted AD1N invites Hawaii amateurs to join the Geratol Net on 75 meters, which meets daily at 0100z at 3668 kHz. It's one way to make Worked All States on 75 meters.
