Comments and highlights of the June, 2023 MW Results

The primary antenna used during this DXpedition was not the usual DKAZ, but a Wellbrook Phased Array. It performed very well.

MW at Grayland in late June had low expectations but surprised with robust and plentiful signals from NZL (70 stations) and Australia (45 signals) in spite of 20-year sunspot record highs. Hawaii and even Alaska provided strong and numerous signals. On the 27th we even heard numerous Japan stations in without a full night time path available. In general the high band was better than the low band, which may be a result of the phased array that we used, but just as likely was the actual propagation which did vary from night to night. The wind turbines nearby did inject some "white noise" below 600 Khz which cut down on the action on the lowest frequencies somewhat. Propagation still exceeded expectations and it was a pleasure to DX with this group of expert DXers.

All in all this was an outstanding DXpedition for late June, just after the summer solstice, with several stations I have not logged from Grayland or the Rockwork cliffs before. It was interesting that we got two passes at the DU stations each night, After local sunset and prior to dawn.

Comments and highlights of the June, 2023 NDB Results
Again there were noise issues but the equipment did not seen to be much of a problem. The recurring noise peaking at 480 Khz and cycling with an unusal moving pattern was traced to the wind turbines nearby (when turning) and will not be negatable. However it is not bad enough to totally spoil LW and low band MW DX by itself, just an annoyance. Hope for calm conditions!

23 Alaskan NDBs is really good for June. The northern third of Alaska is in 24-hour daylight and we still got this many. We alao received a few beacons from the South Pacific region in spite of sunspots hitting a 20-year record high this month. The two Samoan and both Cook Islands NDBs were heard; max distance on LW was about 8400 km. Also we have had many decommissionings affecting us that were pretty much always in at Grayland despite conditions. LLD 353, OX 360 and probably ML 343 are gone for good. So I am pleased with these results although the August 2023 Rockwork cliff managed to outperform with far fewer Alaskans but many more of the distant Aus/Nzl/Pac beacons. MW beacon TM 1630 from NZL was strong and in all 4 nights, reflecting a strong upper MW band.

Flag antenna directed SW. This worked but really provided no improvement over the Wellbrook Phased Array which proved to be good at LW.
Grayland DX Fishbarrel: Nick set up his Fishbarrel MW spotting tool which we actually got to display on the large screen TV and a monitor at the table.
Yuneec Q500 Typhoon 4K camera drone Guy and I did fly the drone this time and got some good aerial video of Casa Sea-Esta, the ocean and surroundings.
