Comments and highlights of the 2022 MW Results

Absolutely the most NZL-centric conditions I've ever encountered on MW.  Very few AUS even though 6WA (Western Australia) did make it. Kiwis were massive, at least 81 and probably more. This is approaching DXpedition record territory for Kiwis although bettered last year with four DXers over 6 days. No Japan/Korea this time. Even though the antenna was never deployed in that direction we usually get a half dozen or so.  Coast parallels appeared again, this time 954 Khz and the ever reliable 1323 Khz. "Today FM" replaces the old MagicTalk network with oldies similar to the original Magic. Gold Sport replaces the oldies of the former Gold AM with live sports. The RNZ National "Frequency is closing" loop announcement on 837 Khz heard clearly on the 5th and 6th. This is last we will ever hear of "More FM" 531 Khz as that station has finally gone silent as of September. It dominated during this DXpedition as it did in so many previous sessions at the cliffs. 19 Newstalk ZB affiliates heard even with 1053 khz gone. Only 12 Hawaiians. If it wasn't a Kiwi the prop did not favor it. An interesting 3 mornings at our favorite cliff overlooking the sea.

A somewhat wet morning awaited Gary and I on Aug 04                         The usual setup in my operational HQ inside the vehicle

Comments and highlights of the Aug 2022 LW Results

Three mornings at the Rockwork 4 location this year made for somewhat sparse and underwhelming NDB results. During the sessions there was concern that there might not be any this dxpedition. Thanks to Aug 5th there were were indeed beacons to be heard, a few dozen in fact. The best action was from New Zealand as Kiwi-centric propagation was the rule for this DXpedition on both the LW and MW bands. 9 NZL as opposed to only 5 AUS beacons, 25-watt 362 WK, and two beacons from the South Island were indicators of the solid Kiwi Centric conditions which had not been experienced here since 2019. Most beacons were weak and down in the static, no blowtorches like the last few years. The MedFER beacon 1630 TM was in all 3 mornings but not continuously. USB offset had been changed to +994 after many years at +1010.  The rise of Solar Cycle 25 seems to be taking its toll.

Missing were such previous reliable indicators as 260 NF, 316 MAJ and 320 AI. Reasons unknown.

Although the antenna was never turned NW toward Alaska there were 15 beacons in "off the side", a dozen being typical. 314 SPY is off for the year by NOTAM or it would have been 16.

All beacons were in early. Nothing at or after 1300 UTC. In all the results were: 40 AUS/NZL/PAC (less than half of last year's 85 and back to 2017 levels), 15/23 French Polynesians (all 23 in last year) and 15 Alaskans.

Very weak 392 LHR (Australia) and 350 KI (New Zealand) found upon revisiting the recordings using a Timewave DSP-59+.
