PICTURES FROM OVER THE YEARS OF HUNTING

HOW AND WHEN I GOT STARTED

I started hunting in 1981 when my brother-in-laws asked if I would like to go squirrel hunting.  I only had a single barrel shotgun, but that was all I needed.  In 1981 all I hunted was squirrel and rabbits.  But that is all it took to get me into the woods and decide that this was a hobby that I truly loved.  I didn't go on the deer hunting trip with my in-laws that year, I guess I just wasn't ready yet.

My first deer hunting trip wasn't until 1982 with my in-laws.  They are the ones who got me started in hunting.   They asked if I would like to go and the rest is history.  That year I didn't get a deer, but I learned a lot about hunting deer from my father-in-law, Charlie and of course my brother-in-laws.  Of course you learn something new every year.  I used an old 16 gauge shotgun with slugs, didn't have a deer rifle yet.  My brother-in-law Denny took a nice 6 point buck that year.  After he took the 6 point he let me use his rifle, a Remington 742 BDL semi-auto in 30-06.

By the next year, 1983, I had purchased a rifle.  It wasn't much, but it was mine.  It was a 7 MM (7x57) German Mauser.  It was all original except it had a Lyman peep sight.  I went deer hunting that year and took my very first deer, a nice 6 point buck.  This is the only deer that I have taken that I do not have a photograph of, but I have a nice rack hanging on the wall.

Here is a spike buck that I took during the 1985 Buck Season.  This deer was taken with a Marlin lever action chambered in 35 caliber.  The little fellow beside me is my oldest son, Brandon, I can't wait till he is old enough to handle a rifle and go with me on a deer hunt.

Here I am with a 4 point buck that I took during the 1992 Buck Season.  Beside me are my two boys, Brandon and Jerod.  A father's best hunting partners!

Here is Brandon and Jerod posing with my 4 point and Brandon is holding my Remington 742 BDL semi-automatic chambered in 30-06.  Brandon can hardly wait for his chance to go on his first deer hunting trip.  As you can tell from the big smile on Jerod's face, hunting is going to be his cup of tea.

This is the hunting party.  This is six of the craziest guys around.  The buck is a 6 point buck, I believe this buck was taken by Sonny.  Over the years our group has gotten smaller due to jobs and family moving away.  We try to get together during buck season, but there always seems to be something that keeps one or two away.  In this picture you have from the left, front row: Charlie, Sonny, Dennis, Alvin and the back row from the left: Kenny (Dink) and me.  We have shared all sorts of good times and memories together.

Here is a picture of Brandon, my oldest son looking at a squirrel up in the tree above him, during the 1995 Buck Season in the Monongahela National Forest in Greenbrier Co., WV.  He is suppose to be watching for deer.  Brandon was 15 years old during this hunting season.  He went hunting with me a few years, but sports and girls caught his attention.  I hope that someday he will go again with me and his brother Jerod.

Here are two guys who are tickled to have gotten a deer.  Alvin on the left is holding a 9 point that he got and I am holding a spike buck taken during the 1995 Buck Season in Greenbrier Co., WV.

Here are three pictures of the inside of the 1969 Dodge school bus that we converted into a camper.  This has been our best setup ever.  Plenty of room for up to 6 people.  There are four bunks in the back, the table lays down to sleep two people.  It has an apartment size gas stove and oven, a double bowl sink, a gas/electric refrigerator and an ice box.  There is a closet for hanging clothes, plenty of cabinet space and it has a bathroom in the back.  We have a converter hooked up to take 110 AC to 12 DC to power the internal lights.  We can run the lights off the battery in the bus or hook up to power mains or generator.
