Notes

Cost Codes:  U16 means "kids under the age of 16."  14U means "kids 14 years of age and under."  Other ages may be shown also.  ULS means "unlicensed spouse."  XYL (ex-young lady) is one's wife (or more politically correct, one's spouse) regardless of license status.  BYOT means "Bring Your Own Tables."

All hamfests are held on Sunday (typically opening at 8:00 am, 6:30 am for vendors) unless otherwise stated.
Dates listed as TBD have not been set yet, but are listed according to last year's date.
Virtually all hamfests sell food/refreshments and hold door prizes/raffles.

Hamfest information is provided as a service to area hams.  Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information listed above, but always contact the hamfest sponsor prior to attending to confirm!  Sponsors should notify VARA of changes/corrections to the above listings to avoid upset patrons.

*Volunteer Examiner (VE) License Testing:

The FCC now requires you apply for a FRN number before attending an exam. Visit www.FCC.gov/FRNREG to obtain your FCC Registration Number before you go (it's quick and easy).

Bring photo ID, original license, any CSCEs, and photocopies of license and CSCEs.  Nominal fee (typically $15) usually charged for ARRL tests; Laurel testing is free.
Save time by filling out NCVEC Form 605 in advance.

Notes for Vendors:

Each hamfest sets it own vendor rules, but here are some guidelines.  Vendors should always contact the hamfest committee for specific vendor requirements, last minute prices, etc.

  • Check to see if the hamfest has reduced rates for advanced sales, and what the deadline is.
  • Use an SASE (Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope) when ordering advanced tickets or reservations or order online.
  • Some hamfests permit early setup the day before, and may permit overnight camping (always check first!).
  • It is your responsibility to collect and report sales taxes as applicable - check with sponsor if unsure of tax regulations.
  • Most hamfests limit what you can sell - always check first.  Few permit food/drink sales that would compete with the club's food concessions.
  • If you need electric power, always check first to be sure it will be available. Tables with electricity available are usually first come, first served, so get there early.
  • Most hamfests are held rain or shine. Tailgaters should be prepared with tarps, canopies, etc. Be prepared for hot sun in the summer - bring shade and water to drink.
  • Bring extra money to be able to make change (you might miss a sale if you can't change that $20!).
  • If you plan to spread your wares out on the ground, bring a ground cloth or table - the ground may be damp.
  • Arrive on time. Many hamfests don't like earlier arrivers, and if you get there too late, you'll miss the bargain hunters who usually show up early and prepared to buy.
  • If permitted, consider selling items that might attract kids and XYLs to keep the ham at your table longer.
  • Be prepared to quote a price for your items. Consider price tags for customer convenience.
  • Don't overprice your items - hamfest buyers are looking for bargains! Do you really want to go home again with that boat anchor?
