I am located in a small mining village near Ashington in Northumberland, England's border county with Scotland. This is the only deep under sea coal mine remaining in the country, which stretches some 7Kms east at a depth of 350ft.
Nearly every village at one time was a coal mining community in this area, which are now all closed.
Ashington was once noted to be the biggest mining village in the country. It was also the home to the world famous footballers Jackie and Bobbie Charlton, not to mention Jackie Milburn.
