Introduction

The Kauai Fire Department responds to all fire and rescue emergencies, and co-responds with Emergency Medical Services to various medical emergencies for the county.

Department Structure

The Kauai Fire Department has eight fire stations around the island, with seven engines, seven rescue Humvees, a Hazmat truck, several pumper apparatus, a rescue helicopter, along with other support vehicles. The department co-responds with other public service agencies, including Barking Sands and State Crash Crews (155.760) at Lihue Airport.

Daily staffing includes 31 firefighters and 1 battalion chief.

American Medical Response (AMR) provides ambulance and paramedic services for the county. They have five ambulances, including one inter-facility unit to transport patients between various hospital facilities around the island.

Radio Communications

Prior to switching over to the countywide trunked radio system, fire communications were on VHF radio frequencies.

Fire, fireground, and EMS dispatch operations moved to the countywide trunked radio system in 1997, while ambulance-to-hospital MEDICOM communications remain on a UHF radio frequency, on 453.400 MHz.

Information on the Kauai County 800 MHz trunked radio system can be found here.
