Personal Shots

Those who know me well know that I would much rather take a picture of something than be the actual subject of a photograph. Nonetheless, on occasion I overcome my relative shyness just to prove I was actually in a rare spot. A couple decades and a few hundred rolls of film later, I have amassed quite a collection of unusual self portraits.

The picture above is my all-time favorite, taken in Greece in 1984. Tan & fit from an entire summer spent traipsing around Europe, I never looked or felt better. I love the duality of sentiments in this shot: the arrogant confidence & strength of youth pictured with columns that have withstood the pressures and ravages of time since the dawn of recorded history. We of course know which will still be standing a hundred years from now, and by default which wins in the end. I doubt this building has changed since my visit many years ago, though my appearance certainly has. Yet as I continue my travels around the world, the image of myself in my mind still looks exactly like the person pictured above....
