Europe

Svalbard Islands, Arctic Norway

Trying not to panic in -7F / -22C degree temperatures as frost begins to take over my clothing and face.

In front of the polar bear warning sign on the outskirts of Longyearbyen.

Ukraine

Entering the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

In front of the famous rusting eerie Chernobyl ferris wheel.

Standing in front of the memorial monument next to Chernobyl Reactor 4, site of the worst nuclear accident in human history. Today the reactor is encased in concrete and lead in an effort to contain radioactive elements. In late 2016 the steel "New Safe Confinement" sarcophagus will completely cover what you see here.

Poland

The famous "work makes you free" sign at the entrance of Auschwitz.

Railway tracks at the main gate of the Birkenau death camp.

England

One of my first pictures on my first "real" trip to another continent,
this one taken deep underground on the famous London tube.

Denmark

Standing next to the famous Little Mermaid at Copenhagen harbor.

Sweden

Always wanting to know what it felt like to be all alone on a deserted island, a friend & I paddled out to this rock in the middle of a lake in Arjang, Sweden. He then left me stranded and rowed away.

Italy

On the left, three Americans try to do a life-size recreation below one of Rome's fine statues. I think I did a pretty good job as the person on the bottom. On the right, with my friend Jorge in front of the leaning tower of Pisa.

In a photograph jokingly titled Betrayal, I straddle a friend clothed in a British flag sporting a Soviet flag of my own with a knife at her throat. We also took a picture of both of us smiling (we called this one Treaty), but this one is by far the more dramatic of the two. I'm proud to say I stole this flag from an Italian Communist Party rally when no one was looking, my own small personal part in ridding the world of the red menace.

France

A little difficult to see, but this seemingly simple picture of me lounging around on top of an elaborate French grave actually took the combined efforts of three other people to shoot. There's the photographer, of course, and two people hidden behind the massive headstone each with an arm reading around the side in an attempt to grab me.

Spain

One of the best trips of my life, here at the end of an entire summer spent bussing around Europe in 1984 (when this and all the photos above were taken). This picture is of some of our group creating a scene on the plane ride home from Madrid. I'm in the center, but the winner for best personal portrait here is Jorge, who is looking mere seconds away from spewing all over the top of my head.

Road sign along the shore of Lake Baikal

Enjoying sticks of mystery meat in the city of Novosibirsk ("New Siberia"),
unexpectedly the only place in Russia I found Dr. Pepper.
