December Activity - Kit Building

I wrote an article in the Nov/Dec 2001 YL Harmonics where I suggested 12 activities that one can do in Amateur Radio during 2002 and recommended that we devote one month to each activity. Some of these may be new to you and others you may not have done. The list of activities are as follows:
This month topic is on Kit Building. I will try to list a brief introduction followed by links to pages that provide addtional information. After reading them be sure to hit the back button to get back to this page. If you know of any cool links, let me know.

What is Kit-building?

Kit-building has taken off again in amateur radio. Back in the "old days", popular kits were Knight Kits and Heathkits to name a few. Now there are new manufacturers in the picture and no matter what your experience level, there is a kit for you. The size of kits have become small too and kits are now being built in Altoids tin and of course there was and still is the popular Tuna Tin kit. There are a few basic equipment that you will need no matter what type of kit you want to build and some of the links below include that. There are tons of help out there in the way of listserv, yahoo!groups and local clubs that are into kit building. However, the best part of kit building has to be being able to show off and/or use a kit you've built on your own when you talk with another ham on the air.
