My condition is called Ischemic Optic Neuropathy ( loss of blood flow to the eyes or brain.) Your retina is fed through the optic nerve with a network of small blood vessels called rods. These rods somewhat resemble fiber optics if you know what they are. When the blood flow is interupted the rods collapse. If not treated immediately the loss of vision is permanent. Did you know that the eyes are the fastest healing organ we have on our bodies? This condition is also sometimes called Giant Cell Arteritis which is usually associated with the body's immune system. When the blood vessels are attacked the immune system cannot fight it off. The symptoms are very similar to macular degeneration which affects the central vision as well but a totally different condition. I still have a small portion of central vision left in my right eye which was just above 20-50 before this last episode. 20-50 is the legal limit for a drivers license so I was living with a handicap as it was. And I didn't drive at night because of the glare. In legal terms I'm classified as legally blind but most would say I'm just visually impaired. In any case its no picnic.....you have to adjust and go on. If you are experiencing eye problems go to your family eye physician as soon as possible because you only have one pair of eyes.
