" Against All the Odds "

Hello....my name is Dave Brown and I'm 49 yearrs old and have been a native of Shelbyville, Indiana all my life. I retired as a journeyman plumber in May of 1999. I had worked in the family plumbing business for 27 years after graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1971.  I had to retire because of a rare eye condition which has left me legally blind. The problem started about 10 years when I had my first episode. Lost my central vision in my left eye first in Sept. of 1996........and then finally losing most of the central vision in the other eye in May  of 1999.

It was pretty devastating at first not being able to read do most tedious things and not being able to drive thus giving it up altogether.....I thought my life was over....

not so.

I signed up for and received Disability Benefits and with the help of the Indiana State Vocational Rehab Center I was able to put some normalcy back into my life having been provided  with many numerous visual aids such as special glasses to help me read and a new computer with adaptive software of which I am now using.

My life had not ended....I was just getting a new beginning.

I'd like to devote most of my web site to the education of and  to the prevention of blindness. There are many reasons and types of

blindness.

Feel free to  search my site and check out some of the links some of which I think will be helpful for anyone having a vision problem or know of someone suffering from vision loss. Also check out some of my other pages with hobbies and other interests.

On February 26, 2001 I started a new part time job with an Office Cleaning Company. So I'm now back in the work force after almost a year and a half. I guess my persistence payed off.

On May  31, 2002 it will have been  3 years since I lost most of my vision. I have adapted quite well considering my situation. And I have gained the utmost respect for those individuals who are mentally and physically challenged. I'd also like to thank my friends and family for their support.

"What makes us  so discontented with our condition

is the exaggerated idea we have of the happiness of others"
