VISTA or WINSOWS 7

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows

The Elder Geek

Linux Distros:

Do ya want to run Vista?, it's half baked but the service packs have fixed most of it.. Windows 7 is what vista should have been. Windows 7 does offer better performance than its predecessors.

Even though Vista and 7 share the same hardware requirements,Vista felt incomplete and broken, Windows 7 seems polished. In windows 7 Windows Explorer has been re written. I have been using win7 for about 6 months now (RTM) version, and I find no need to go back to xp at all, it seems to boot and shutdown faster and the performance is snappy, and just as fast as xp. Thier are many other performance and features I did not list here that made my transition from vista or xp a good choice. Although I have issues with explorer 8 browser crashing all the time and being a memory hog, I think if microsoft can fix this, that explorer 8 would be a feature filled professional browser.

What I thought of vista before the service packs.

Do you have enough computer to run it? because it's bloat ware on steroids. I have to admit I wanted to run vista myself to clear all the hype and really wanted it to work for me I was a little excited. But my excitement was dashed from the install to my migration back to XP. in fact moving over to the MAC seems to be on my mind since vista release and linux has always been a choice for me. This blog will not be a technical detailed view into my findings since it would take to many pages and swollen fingers to write. The test machine I use here is AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Asus A8N SLI Deluxe NVIDIA Socket 939 Motherboard Dual RAID Front Side Bus 1000MHz

Vista lipstick on a pig from RTM to final to SP1

First off I noticed that the install went very wrong when I tryed to do the upgrade xp install (blue screen of death) since vista did not like most of the programs and drivers that I was running with xp. And it had a real problem with Nero burning rom it would not even continue to install without removing it from xp. The clean install of vista went without a hitch and was a lot faster then installing xp. On the first boot up of vista I noticed I had seen this all before!. This is xp with window blinds!, I said, and you can not turn the theme off. (sigh), (window blinds integrated in windows?. oh my!. lipstick on a pig!.

Hardware and software compatibility is, in fact, scary. Driver problems even compatible drivers didn't work right. And in the final release of vista drivers are still in beta, or just don't work right.

it seems that even comparable software had problems running ,this was hit and miss folk's. Welcome to Hell with Software compatibility with Vista x64 also.

It looks like MS made vista look and feel like a cross between Linux and OSX (leopard) it is designed from the best of server 2003 and XP MS tell's us. I think I wasted a DVD burning the rc1 iso. I would of liked to stay using vista, but I was forced to abandon vista due to the lack of functionality. Performance problems, compatibility issues, stupid UI, Windows Sidebar suck's eats resources. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves It can't do Web mail. Vista's anti virus and anti-spam features are embarrassing. consistency problems. photo import horribly broken. User Account Control UAC should be taken out back and shot. To many steps to do a simple single thing!. Windows desktop is messy, sloppy and not consistent . (new users need consistency to learn). And the time when it will be possible to stay in Vista longer than in XP that's when we will forget about xp. For now MS has a lot of work ahead of them, will it ever be ready? not much better after SP1 . For me Linux and the mac is my next move for a permanent os solution. Ohh MS what are you doing to me I need to run your OS!. I will continue to use Vista on dual boot, I'm just to curious to see what MS updates. Auto updates are coming in everyday let's see what happens, but until when all this is fixed this review will stand.

M$ is selling the same crap with a different look. five years in production what on earth was MS doing all this time?. Care to guess?
