Greenwood Marching Band Invitational

Well, today marked the fourth time that I participated in the annual Greenwood Marching Band Invitational. Our amateur radio efforts, coordinated by Bob LaGrange, N9SIU, dealt primarily with parking cars in an orderly fashion. It's a lot of work, and requires a great deal of standing and walking, which I'm not real good at, but overall it was a fun time.

There's another good benefit of doing events like these. It gives folks the opportunity to test their equipment and readiness to operate in case of an emergency. For instance, I found out tonight that my lapel microphone/speaker thingy is in need of a new speaker. It was only by using it in the field that its deficiencies became apparent.

So not only did I get to spend a good day with the amateur radio folk, but I also got to test my equipment and readiness, and get some much needed exercise. And did I mention the free food???

Priorities

I'm going to take a short hiatus in purchasing new amateur radio equipment for a while. How long? Well, more than likely until 2008 or so.

Most folks that know me well know that in addition to my amateur radio hobby, I enjoy collecting, shooting, and carrying firearms. My firearms hobby took a major hit back in 1994 when the ridiculous "Clinton Crime Bill" was passed.

Now that the law has sunset, I am going to attempt to make up for lost time, before another gun grabbing administration gains power, and re-enacts another pointless law. So, although I'll still be operating on ham radio, and will still maintain and repair my existing equipment, any new purchases will have to wait. Unlike my firearms hobby, it's unlikely my amateur radio hobby will be legislated into oblivion on a mere whim.

Wasps and Writings

I put a copy of a humorous treatice I wrote for the June 2005 issue of The Spark Gap online. It's in the writings section.

Website Upgrade

Well, I finally got around to making some major upgrades to the website. Gone is the hideous formatting of the Netscape WYSIWYG editor. I've switched to straight HTML, using a text editor.

Now for some content.
