THE MANCHESTER WIRELESS SOCIETY
ESTABLISHED FEBRUARY 1911
G5MS G3HOX AND G7ABC
THE MANCHESTER WIRELESS SOCIETY
Formed in February 1911 as 5MS, It is one of the
oldest radio societies in the world and
as the second oldest in the UK.
After the birth of amateur radio in this country and as
time progressed 5MS was looked upon as a leading
voice in amateur radio around the U.K. When amateurs decided that it was time
they had some representation in government 5MS (which was taking on
amateur cause's nation wide) was regarded by most amateurs as the obvious choice but,
was over looked in favor of the very much newer "London radio club" (Later known as the "London radio society", Now known as The R.S.G.B.)
because of its (then) closer proximity and influential ties within the capital.
One of 5MS most recognized achievements was in 1919 when
it came first in a transatlantic contest. Using a home built 1kw radio
costing £100.15s.03d (£100.77p) and paid for by the society members, After permission was
given by the land owners, members of 5MS operated it from
Heaton Park Manchester (SD80) (IO83VM)
Government legislation in the thirties meant that all UK amateur radio
stations would have to use the prefix "G". From now on 5MS would now be known
as G5MS. Until lately it boasted a membership of over 200 but has
thinned out with the opening of many more clubs across the country.
Through out the early years and up to the end of WWII and not having a club
house, One of its regular meeting places
has been the famous Llyons cafe's which up to the end of the 1950's had outlets
all over the world.
On the last Tuesday in February 1957 a second club(G3HOX) was formed at
"THE DOMMET STREET
SCHOOL, BLACKLEY, MANCHESTER."
Three of the founder members being G2ALN ERIC TAYLOR, G2HW HARRY and
G2AKR DON (silent key). It was not seen as a rival but as a more convenient club house for
those living around the north of the city.
In 1996 G5MS & G3HOX amalgamated and became
