Radio Amateur Examination Course

This course runs throughout the year starting in September and new students can join the course at any time. The City and Guilds of London Institute Radio Amateur examinations are held in May and December and they are of the multi-choice format. The subjects covered are as follows :-
Licensing conditions, Transmitter interference, Electromagnetic compatability,
Operating procedures, Electrical theory, Solid state devices, Receivers, Transmitters, Measurements, Propagation and Antennas.

Novice Licence Training Scheme

The Novice License Training Scheme, which was proposed by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), is designed to bring more people into the hobby at a level which suits all beginners, young and old. To obtain the Novice (classB) Amateur Radio License a practical training course, organised by this Society's tutors under the auspices of the RSGB, must be successfully completed and then the Novice Radio Amateur Examination (NRAE - subject number 773 - City and Guilds of London Institute) must be passed. To obtain the Novice (class A) License you need the above qualifications plus a pass in the 5 words per minute Novice Morse test.
The Novice course practical training tutor is Tommy Lever (jnr). The morse tutors are David Morgan (G4EZF) and David Mellings (G0WJS). The RAE & NRAE courses run throughout the year, examinations are currently held in May and December (With future plans for test on demand) at the G5MS shack.

Morse Classes

The Morse Code is taught all the year round to the RAE, Novice and the A/B licence standards. The Novice (A) & A/B license requires expertise at 5wpm and the RAE (A) license 12wpm. There is, available at the meetings, Morse Code learning equipment and excellent tutors in the form of the two David's mentioned above. The both David's are extremely helpful and will teach you at a pace that is suitable for you. Cassette tapes which aid the learning of the Morse Code are available for loan from G5MS. Versatile computer software is obtainable via adverts in the various radio amateur magazines. There are also a number of books which can be bought again via the magazines or via the RSGB and even cheaper from G5MS (Members book service). Further to this, there are many Radio Amateurs who give Morse lessons on the air communicating mainly on the 2m (144MHz) and 70cm(433MHz) bands. Even if a person is not licensed to transmit they can still learn by listening.
