    Other Important Stuff...
  • The Virginia General Assembly has approved specialized vehicle license tags for Amateur Radio.  The long awaited ARES/RACES tag can now be applied for, as well as the ARRL member tag.  Check with the DMV for full details on how to get your call sign and organization on the road!
  • The District 13 Emergency Communications Conference held on 24 July 1999 was a smash hit, bringing in lots of hams from all over the state!  Similar events are now taking place in the other districts, to make it easier for EVERYONE involved in ARES/RACES to get their six hours of class time required to obtain the new ARES/RACES ID card.  This is the same type of ID card carried by emergency officials throughout the state and is widely recognized.  Some organiztional changes were also announced at that meeting:
Bob Ham, KK4IY,was announced as the new Section Manager.
Taking Bob's place as District 13 Coordinator is Lyle Palmer, KI4BH, former City of Salem EC.
Talks are underway to get next year's conference held at Virginia Tech once again under the same one-day format, while several other conferences will be taking on another format: week-long streches lasting only a couple hours a day, where attendance would only be required a couple hours a night.  Also, keep a look out for information on this year's SET, as it too is a requirement for the ID card.
  • General Information on Virginia ARES can now be found on the air via packet.  Blow the dust off that TNC and connect with the KD4BNQ-7 PBBS on 145.730, and type "ARSEPM".  Also, check you equipment to see if you can reach the 147.135 repeater at Dismal Peak (CTCSS Tone is 100Hz).  This could very well be a key repeater in District 13.
  • Be sure to check the calendar often to see what events are coming up.  The schedule is rather filled with stuff to do that is related to Amateur Radio and the next few months will provide some wonderful oportunities for participation in some excellent activities.
    As Always...

The Virginia Mountain Amateur Radio Club meets on the first Monday of every month at 7:00 pm in room 203 at the former Rivermont Elementary School on Rockbridge Street in Covington, VA.  The club operates amateur station W4COV, located in the same room, on several HF and VHF bands, and also maintains the WA4HTI repeater located on Warm Springs Mountain at an elevation of 4300 feet above sea level.  The group also provides several communications services to the community free of charge, via Amateur Radio.  We encourage active involvment in the hobby of Ham Radio and provide licensing classes and test sessions at least once a year.  Contact us: by mail - 1110 Rockbridge, Covington, VA. 24426-7300; by electronic mail - at [email protected], or by clicking on any of the "Contact Us" links; or come and visit us at one of our meetings to see first hand what it's all about!

Thanks for stopping by!  We update often, so please visit every week or so and watch for new stuff!
