My Interests

After seeing article about Amateur radio in one of the local news paper in 85, My craze of HAM radio started. Used to have a broadcast band Philips receiver and some how beat ssb signals in 40 mts with another packet transistor & or listened to AM  with inverted V ant. Sneaked out of house and Cycled every day 20km away to OM VU2NO's shack for few months. Meanwhile getting my hand on Morse key was another adventure as neither was it sold locally nor cud I afford it with meager pocket money. So looking again to find ways to procure a key got me going, finding some one in local telecom/telegraph dept head office( chief accountant) and then helping him to get a extra LPG gas cylinder, finally got my own shining brass Morse key. Whole story wud have ended here as I could not keep it up due to final year of schooling and blaw blaw.Had it not been a accidental bump with another HAM A71BY here in Qatar few years (almost a decade -97) later. He again advised me to pursue the licence which seemed to have eluded me for one reason or another but mainly due to my morning QTH being DX land hardly let me do some thing about it. Any way , During one vacation back in VU land I had Icom R2 with me taken back from DX and then discovering 2mt activity at VU2KOD and then copying lima lima of vu2pll/vu2kpa .With their help, found out that Amateur radio exam was going to be conducted at near by city(Madurai) very soon. Luckily I had some the old HAM books with me. A quick crash course, some dit dit dahs with the help of my PC and my XYL for 2 week put be back into picture good enough for grade II. Again sneaking to the exam centre in Feb 2001 and writing the exam were no less story fit for any movie as atmosphere at QTH had turned against amateur radio for reasons beyond my understanding. And then waiting period started once again as I was back to DX and no idea what cud be done. Soon one for accidental eyeball with another VU ham(VU3NAX) got me in touch with ARSI where OM VU2SDN was kind enough to follow up my case and finally got me the call sign/ licence VU3MUV. :)

These days OM vu3muv still operates mostly as SWL with help of ICOM PCR1000 as in A7 land no reciprocal licence is being issued !! yet... :( . but some times operates a guest from A71A club station under its callsign. Any one who had QSO with me can have the A71A QSL card by sending me their QSL card direct to  Murali.B, PO box 1855, Doha,QATAR. Lately Helped in Setting up Winlink PMBO  A71BY and sysoping it.Also Some ECHOLINKing helps to release the steam.

Operated as VU4AN/ VU3MUV during Hamfest India 2006. QSL cards are still coming in and replied. QSL info as show above.

Setup is ICOM PCR1000, Sony ICF 2010D, Yaesu VX5, Kenwood TS2000, Yaesu FT3000 M, wire dipole for 20mt band  ,Diamond W8010  multiband wire ant , Nogoya Dual band vertical for sat op .New additions in 2007 are Icom IC756 Pro III , Yaesu FT8900 , VX2R. HF operations in IC756 Pro III is best so far and TS2000 does not stand a chance though the comparison is bit unfair.

During my graduation era I was in Air wing N.C.C  where I picked up this hobby too. But nothing further cud be done other then flying CL (control line) model for few months as radio control modeling was for more elite breed or I was supposedly beneath such ability. Again after many years later(2002) here in DX land got my model pilot licence ( it is a licenced hobby here and became the first VU aero modeler here). Member of Qatar scientific Club (Aviation)

My aero model setup is 2 JR radios ( 462 and digital 3810) few T35s , J3 cub, Cessna cropduster (Agwagon C), Herebo Shuttle - all fixed wings being 46 size and heli is 32 size. New additions are Extra 330 xl ( .91 size) and Align 450 SE V2

  • Marksmanship- Rifle shooting

During same period 1988-1992 after not seeing any action in aero modeling , Joined the shooting team in N.C.C. Found it more rewarding , participated in Nationals twice , state championship thrice , won state championship in 1991 with two new state records out of which N.C.C record is believed to be still valid. But unfortunately , here in DX land only locals(citizens)  are allowed to enjoy this sports. So goes my marksmanship saga down the drain. Life Member of Trichy Rifle Club.

Setup 25/50 x  spotting scope, shooting jacket, support sling , nothing else :( licence for Rifle/pistol is expensive as it needs greasingggg few people irrespective of whether or not you are state champion marksman...No can do)
