Activities

(For previous year's activities, see the QSY Archive)

QSY Society members are an active bunch, and there's usually always something going on, whether sponsored by the club, the ARRL, other clubs or simply a group of hams getting together to operate and have fun.  Here you can see what we've been up to, including links to any photographs in the gallery.  See the QSY Calendar for details about upcoming events.

2/12/05 "J-Pole Building Party" - The smells of solder, flux and propane were in the air over Hopewell Junction on a crisp Saturday morning as close to a dozen QSY members kicked off preparations for this summer's upcoming Empire State Games by building a batch of "J-Pole " antennas for use at some of the venues.

The group build was the idea of Frank KB2YUR, who besides being the Eastern NY Section Emergency Coordinator is also the local communications coordinator for the Games.  However, spearheading the effort was Julian WA2WMJ, who designed his own variation of the classic J-Pole, prepared the materials, provided instruction for those who needed it (as well as those who supposedly didn't...) and generally oversaw the entire operation.

By the time the fires were put out (just kidding), the smoke had cleared, and JB had reached the limits of his sanity (hey - this WAS a QSY event after all...), the group stood back to admire a little over a dozen completed antennas, tested and ready to go.  This was one of those events that worked on a number of levels:  it was educational, it served a greater purpose, and most of all it was fun!

A special thanks goes out to Julian for all of the time and effort he spent planning, procuring and preparing the materials, as well as putting up with a bunch of us who at times tested the limits of his patience...  Thanks also to everyone who gave up a good part of their Saturday to help out:  Ron N2SKH and his daughter Erin, Nick N2QZ, Janet KC2LUR, Ray KC2MMY and "Nacho", Tom KC2EKI, Roy KC2DMH, Mike KC2HUV and his daughter Laura, Frank KB2YUR, and Ken N2OBY.
