INVOLVING LOCAL SCHOOLS & COLLEGES
"The two months of activity from M2000A saw over 300 schoolchildren (15
classes) from 10 different schools visit the station. Most were Primary
school children (aged 8 - 11), but two Secondary schools (aged 11 - 16)
also came to the station. One Grammar school also visited. They came with
3 teachers who held amateur radio licences, while some of the children were
licensed as Novices (2E1 callsigns). Apart from the Novice licencees, the
children were all introduced to amateur radio for the first time.
The static and "hands on" exhibits were explained to the children by
members of the M2000A team. The exhibition charted amateur radio from its
earliest beginnings to the present day. The children could also listen to
VHF broadcast stations on the latest Arcam Digital radio or thet could
monitor air traffic at London City Airport on an Icom IC-R1000 computer
driven radio.
The children were then treated to the experience of a lifetime by talking
to radio amateurs from thousands of miles away. Initially, we got
questions comparing amateur radio with mobile phones and the Intranet, but
one by one the children were convinced that communication by amateur radio
was a much more thrilling experience.
The team thoroughly enjoyed sharing the enthusiasm shown by all the
children and we hope that, through our efforts, we have met some of the
next generation of radio amateurs.
