Participation in public service events has been very rewarding for me. Most of these events are bike ride/races, walk-a-thons, marathons, etc. These events offer opportunities to meet new people, get out in the sun (or rain), and have some fun while sharpening FM operating skills. It is especially gratifying when a participant or the event sponsor recognizes what amateur radio brings to their experience and expresses thanks for the assistance. I am sometimes disappointed that more of the local amateur community does not participate more frequently, especially since I feel that these events are quite fun! However, I think everyone does try to help wherever they can, as their schedules allow.

I am just beginning to try to participate with the local ARES group. I don't know much about it at this point, but participation in this group falls right in line with my personal philosophy of trying to help out whenever possible, wherever there is a need.

I have dabbled in QRP and packet, but haven't done much with that for quite awhile. I'm interested in trying the various digital modes that are available on HF, as well as sharpening my CW skills to the point that I can have an actual QSO. It has been a couple of years since I took and passed the 13wpm code test!
