Wow, what a transmitter hunt. Eleven out of eleven teams finished, with
seven of them in first place. What an ending to a tremendously fun hunt
and under one hour. As you can see from my GPS
track, I made a few (mileage) costly mistakes. I didn't do to bad time
wise but, only mileage counts in this game. |
overall GPS track
|
location of Fox-1
|
|
|
The Garmin
StreetPilot-III can plot the shortest distance between points (as you
can see on one of the maps). If only I knew where the transmitter was
hidden to begin with, I could have been a winner too. |
location of Fox-2 |
shortest route if done
properly |
Eleven teams gathered at the Fremont Start Point, taking initial
bearings to both foxes. My bearing to the first
fox was 325* and the second fox 345*.
Actual bearing were 321* to the first and 345* to the
second fox. |
|
|
|
|
EQUIPMENT I USED:
1) SuperDF | TDOA: To obtain my
initial bearing.
2) AHHA
MicroFinder Doppler: Using "Digital and Standard Filtering". Worked
really well on both.
3)
Garmin StreetPilot-III: With street level GPS mapping.
4) Small (8-1/2 x 11) laminated map of Fremont,
compass,
protractor and felt-tip
pen.
5) Icom IC-R3, U-R-Here
radio. An invaluable receiver for direction finding. With it's
graphic (historical) display of the fox transmitters signal strength and
it's 4 built-in attenuators, I was able to drive, quite secure in
knowledge I was getting closer to the fox. When my IC-R3 was dialed to
attenuation #4, I knew I was within walking distance of the transmitter.
6) Mobile radio, Standard
C5900DA. I use this tri-bander to listen to both fox frequencies and
listen in on the talk-in communications channel. |
|
|
|
CONCLUSION:
1) Map of the area your hunting.
2) Initial bearing to all foxes.
3) Listen, at all times, to all the Fox Frequencies.
4) Icom IC-R3, as a
U-R-Here radio is priceless. |
|
|
The first fox
pretty low to the ground and only transmitting 3-watts. Making it
difficult to hear from the start point. One nice
thing about the AHHA MicroFinder,
this Doppler was pointing towards the fox before I could hear it on my
mobile radio. |

|
|
The second fox
didn't hide at all. Larry-KD6FFN just placed the fox box on-top of his
vehicle. |
|
|
Dinner was
PIZZA at MISSION PIZZA on Washington Blvd, Fremont, California. |

See you at the
next hunt, a "Bay Hunt" Saturday June 15, 2002 at 6:00 PM.
Start from anywhere. Rich-KN6FW will be the FOX and the talk-in will be
on 147.045+ PL94.8.Jim Sakane KD6DX |
